Rain or drizzle all day, 13-18deg, 40km, av. 14km/hr, tot. 1291km. Awoke to the pitter patter of rain on the windows, but seeing we've got a stopover it doesn't matter. Time to just lounge around in bed and wait for a 8am breakfast. We are staying in our first B&B, an old converted three story mansion about 800m from the city centre. ... was presented in a very interactive way. I read a little sign in one of the town centres that spoke of the devastation to Belgium and it's people during WWI. In 1915, over 5,000 Belgians fled to France for safety from the Germans. It seems like a bit of a rabbit warren here, all confined to inside the city walls or moat that acts as a wall around the medieval centre. Bruges has only become as rich as it is, due to the wealth resulting from its time as a port. It did in fact used to be the biggest port in Northern Europe but is now no longer used as close by is Zebrugge.

A lot of the buildings in the centre have stepped lintels ...

When we set out to sea, it was a bit choppy because the wind was against us and tide with us, but not unmanageable, we just had to make sure things were stowed below properly, as a couple of things reminded us that they weren’t! The day slowly brightened up and calmed down and ended up with sunshine when we arrived at Middelburg. The day’s end – perfect.
