Escape the Pepto Bismal Palace

A travel blog entry by mercadoagogo

We left the Hotel Continental without further harm and informed Peter the friendly desk person about our hotel woes. Upon informing him that we were leaving early and to which he could care less, I proceeded to tell him about how disappointed we were with the hotel most notably about the sleeping vagabond in the stairwell which he promptly claimed …

Stiges - day trip

A travel blog entry by mercadoagogo

Took RENFE to Sitges. Spent the afternoon wandering around. First stop a comfortable little bar along the Mediterranean with sleep inducing couches and great drinks. They have this juice drink that combines every conceiveable fruit into one large glass. It looked yummy or at least that is what Kristen told me. This is a beach town and so we were …

We arrived at the Marsille Airport early and had to wait to check in, and we waited in the cafe lounge. Outside of the extra payment for the golf bag, everything went smoothly and the flight was only an hour. It was our first trip on Spanair.
We landed at the Barcelona airport at around 12:30pm. I think the both of us …

... and flakey (What's that all about?!!)

I finished my first Wilbur Smith novel and started on another "Eagle in the Sky". about a man who joins the Israeli airforce and get's his face blown off so marries a blind woman. I'm doing it an injustice there, it was very good,

I spent a lot of my evenings in the Placa Real. A square surrounded by bars. There was a great atmosphere adn quite a few street entertainers.

... crowds parted to reveal several riders on horseback who were distributing handfuls of sweets to anybody quick enough to catch them or collect them from the ground. This was quite popular with the littl'uns.

After the horses, the local castellers team, Castellers de la Vila de Gracia arrived, resplendent in their blue and white costumes and treated us to several different structures and moving towers. Allthough they didn't attempt any of their more challenging towers they ...

    Top Place to stay!!!!!

    from gaynor74

Just returned from a 3 day stay in Oct 04. The Hostel is in a great location. At first glance thought it was in a bit of dodgy area but soon felt at ease. Room 226 had just what we needed for a good base in a very central part of Barcelona. I do agree with a few other reports about noisey toilets but it didn't bother me. Why pay extra money for pricey accommodation when you can book somewhere like this and spend more in La Rambla enjoying yourself. This is the first time I have stayed in a Hostel type accommodation and would definitely do so again. Recommended.

    Great

Great location & friendly staff. Basic but very clean rooms (don't stay here if you like a bit of luxury). I would definately stay here again if going back to Barcelona, its just of Plaza Catalunya and Las Ramblas and cheap in comparison to a lot of the hotels in that area.

    Great value but noisy area

    from anonymous

Just spent 3 nights here, lovely atmospheric little hotel in a great location for seeing Barcelona, we didn't need to use public transport & did all the main sights !

Weather was very hot & no air con. however both our rooms had fans. The larger room was at the front & a good size with en-suite plus a second basin in the room - all good except for the endless noise from outside all night & too hot to close the window - would stay again but only at a cooler time of year when we could sleep with the window closed.

Our son had a small single at the back & he slept pretty well with only the odd disturbance from late returning guests - if you aren't bothered about a view try for a room at the back for a more peaceful experience

    Excellent!!

My friend and I visited Barcelona for the Sonar festival, and stayed at Hosteria Grau for 7 nights. This quaint hostel is basic but homely and welcoming. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Rooms and bedlinen/towels clean. Only drawback was some noise from outside. And also the fact that the ajoining cafe closed 3 days into out stay. We had 3 lovely breakfasts there, and was disappointed to see it was closing. If i return to Barcelona I will definitely stay here again, excellent value for money.

    Fantastic!

We spent seven nights at the Hosteria Grau in May 2004, and had a great time. We rented one of the apartments in the adjoining building (directly connected to the main hotel via a door and stairs), for a bargain seventy euros a night. The apartment was huge and very clean, with two balconies overlooking the street. The bedroom would have slept three, and the other room had a fridge, kettle, table and chairs, plus another double bed. There was also a separate loo and shower room.

The staff were friendly and helpful and spoke good English. The Grau is in a great location, only three minutes' walk from the Rambla and about the same from Plaza Catalunya. I will definitely try and stay here again next time we go to Barcelona.

My wife and I spent 5 nights in Barcelona in mid May 2004 and had wonderful time. This place is conveniently located close to all the actions and relatively quiet, however street leading to the place is dirty. We had an inside double room with shower and bathroom which was dark, not very clean and with sewage smell. Don't get fool by the pictures in their website. The reality will hit you once you see this place. We had reservation for 5 nights and canceled 3 nights as soon as we saw the room. We could hear every flush in the building. Not recommended.

    Nothing great

    from anonymous

The room was not very clean and the walls were very thin. The bed had an annoying plastic sheet under the sheets which was very noisy, as was the bed frame itself. The staff was friendly and the location was very central. At night, however, the streets approaching the hotel did not feel exceptionally safe. Not a place I'd return to.

Place to stay if you like street culture

    from minimu

We stayed in Room 202 in May 2004. The room was facing the void and dark regardless the time of the day, and you can hear the sound from neighboring rooms and the echos in the void very clearly. The room furnishing is minimal, but the public space is nicely decorated and clean. (* Internet access is only 1EU per hour, whereas it usually costs 1,90EU in Internet cafes in the city.)

What makes Hosteria Grau different from other hostals is the cool location in El Raval - neighboring record stores, art book stores, sneaker shops, cafes and bars, and great skatebording and graffiti scenes. This is the best place to stay, if you like street culture.

    !!Superb, Superb, Superb!!

Stayed at the Hosteria for the 3 times that i've visited the wonderful city of Barcelona and it's the best. Clean, tidy, friendly and amazing value for money - excellent and well recommended!!

    Loved this place

    from anonymous

I have stayed here twice and found it a great place to stay. The location is great just 5 mins walk from Plaza Catalunya and Las Ramblas. Also I liked the very attractive design of the reception and lounge area. The rooms are clean and of a good size with ceiling fans and some have balconies. One of the best things about staying here is the cafe next door where you can get great breakfast and eat in a very authentic local bar.
