Another day, another port. The Dominican Republic is the eastern side of the island of Hispaniola. The western side is Haiti. We docked at a port called La Romana. There are a few different things you can do here. We chose to visit some caves call Cueva de las Miravillas (the cave of miracles). It was a great option because we got to see a bit of the countryside, we had a very good taxi driver who told us a bit about the island life ...

      Gracias 180 Grados!

A travel blog entry by vicky17 on Jun 28, 2014

Its my last day as a volunteer at 180 Grados in Guaymate and we had a farewell get together by going to the river. Unfortunately yudelka wasn't feeling too well, another case of Chikungunya! (Side note: only the dominicans would write a song about Chikungunya in the dembo style - very fast-paced and popular in all the clubs) It was nice and relaxing to swim in the river and we had lunch of fried ham with plantains and a type of potato whose name I can't recall. Then got back ...

It was soooo worth it though - absolutely delicious. They didn't have any birthday candles, so Matilda's husband came out with a house candle that they use for ...

... children in the houses. The orphanage would really like for the Rotary to make something happen with this, and we did speak with the director of the vocational school in Consuelo. It is a possibility, but the club will have to come in January or February when the new sewing class starts and plead their case to the new students, to see if they will be willing to volunteer their time outside of class hours...so we are on hold with this at the moment. The last thing ...

      Schools update

A travel blog entry by hmaclean on Oct 20, 2008

So I've been here for a little over a month now, and I figured it might be time to give an update on how things are going in the schools where I am working. I know I mentioned this before, but I still feel it's important to point out how wonderful the students are. Each school has a different feel and a different dynamic, as they are all in different bateyes and are quite separate from one another. However, even with the different dynamics, ...
