Montenegro, the newest country in the world

... smoker-friendly than the USA in general, but Montenegro was even more extreme than the other European countries we’d been to. Employees were smoking while working (including the train ticket lady), people would light up a cigarette right next to you without even thinking about consideration, and people on the train were even smoking (ignoring the no-smoking symbols). It was so weird and so terrible. I’m sure we smelt ...

Die Stadt dagegen hat eine recht nette Altstadt.

Da ich dank des Taxis recht frueh in Ulcinj war, hatte ich beschlossen nicht hier zu uebernachten sondern weiterzureisen.

Gruss
Ralf
Waiting for an early bus

... lovely cobblestone streets and a pretty view of the sea. The sunset was really colorful, but was also the major attraction of the town. There are supposed to be some nice beaches in the summer, but, once again, it was the wrong season for that. It was an early to bed night to prepare for a 5am wakeup in order to catch the 6am bus. We arrived at the bus station with about 15 min to ...

a crawl past the Montenegro/Albania border

... or any other European language. Anyway, I would spend the rest of my days in Albania learning Albanian (didn't want to be taken off-guard like in Trebinje, Bosnia). Then trying to unlearn it in Macedonia where they are not the biggest fans of Albanian. Confusing. For example, the Albanian for no is "yo" (written as "jo") and yes is "po". So I was a po' yo-yo the way I communicated. Another habit is that Albanians nod their head to say no and shake to indicate yes. Utterly confusing.

Ulcinj, Montenegro

... staying in private lodging. The town did not have Coke Light or Coke Zero anywhere. Granted the people here are in great shape but I was disappointed with this void. I did take note of the lower prices here than what I had been paying throughout Europe. There were numerous Internet cafes for only 1E an hour which is a fraction of the usual price. I worked on the Internet and then left to return to my apartment. I was trapped in this mass movement of ...

Last stop in Montenegro

... manage the same throughout relatively underdeveloped Albania, but at least it's a good start. Shkodra doesn't seem to have much going for it in terms of attractions, so I'm making a beeline for Tirana once I get in and pull out some lek (the local currency). I just booked a couple nights in the one existing hostel there; while I'm never an enormous fan of the dorms, I figure it's about time to get connected with some other travelers and have access to ...

No rest for the wicked

... refused. She didn't seem to know the bus times or the best way to get out to Stari Bar though, so it was essentially a waste of time going there. So instead I went to the supermarket to buy some water and a snack and then caught a taxi onwards for a mere €3. The former old town sits up on a rocky bluff about 5km outside of Bar - far enough away that you don't have to look at the place. It's hemmed in by sweeping, rough mountains, with sheer cliff drops ...

Jumping Around

... Really!! Steven and Jessica hated the idea of sharing with the owners, fair enough since they had only a 2 week holiday and left the next day. Apart from the first day I never saw them again. Nice people though. The whole day was wasted arguing with agency. What a cafuffle. I was prepared to take the first person at the bus stop. Anways, the only thing i got done the first day was to go to the rundown bus station and ask the information window when the bus leaves for ...

Independence beers in Budva

... at the newly-opened Hippo Hostel. Next day in Budva I was initially unimpressed. But the random detritus, sharp pebbles, chubby local package tourists beaching themselves on banana lounges and a neglected air along the main beach was eventually overshadowed by the sunshine, a pleasantly unmarred old tower and some nice beaches further away from the ...

... signs were still in place...in fact, in the stone in front of the bombed out arena where the hockey and ice skating took place the carved logo of "Sarajevo 84" was still there...it really was a sight. We stayed at a guest house just off the market...the night life was really amazing as it seems that most of the 20 and 30 somthings have forgotten they days of war and destitution...we saw very few "battle wounded" people, which really was a surprise...it was fantastic to be ...
