    We left Plovdiv for a long day on the bus to the city of Nesebar on the Black Sea. After a two hour drive we arrived in Stefan's hometown of Kazanlak in the Valley of the Roses. Here they manufacture 90% of the world's rose oil. The roses were done blooming, but we passed FIELDS of sunflowers and lavender. Gorgeous!! Also a couple of wagons pulled by horses with pom poms. Roma people. In Kazanlak we went to the Thracian Museum and then visited two Thracian tombs. One ...

    ... buildings. In some cases you could see where the cladding had fallen off and there were brick walls underneath. Not sure whether the original buildings would have been entirely wooden and the cladding is put onto modern buildings to look authentic. Anyway, it was very attractive and a nice place to wander around. A few galleries and gift shops, but we weren't tempted.

    ... one of the churches ( how did they make such good maps 800 years ago? And how come this tiny place - called Mesembria then - was so important?) and a bit of sleeping / reading on the beach. No sun loungers available yet, but lots of activity suggesting they will be soon. Maybe the season starts on June 1st.

    On our return to Burgas we made a beeline for the wonderful-looking ice cream shop I mentioned in a previous blog entry, but unfortunately it was closed. It was only about 3pm, but it had started raining, so maybe that was why it wasn't open.
