ZipFiji - ziplining in the rainforest

... hard. So we were all pretty wet. I had put my camera in my hubby’s pocket as it was pretty futile to try and take some videos in the rain.

Too soon we were whizzing down line #8 which ends back at the thatched canopy where we started with our rigging up. As we all walk back under the canopy, there are about 9 new guests to do the zip line. One of ...

... but moved to Uprising the next day. Uprising is awesome. Our Bure is the size of our house. It has a shower that is enclosed with no roof and lots of plants and landscaping inside. It is the coolest shower I've ever seen. They have horse riding on the beach, a pool, beach bar, huge open air restaraunt (US$75/night). We spent the first day lounging on the beach and by the pool. We went diving in the Beqa Lagoon the second day. We also went to the ...

Captain Cook's Footsteps - Part 2

... we should add), or trivia about politics, music or films. We've spent quite a few evenings enjoying their company over a glass of wine (not to mention the great prawn dinner cooked by Janet one evening - see pic). All in all, these were our adventures in Fiji. We've enjoyed the scenery, the swimming and meeting the locals very much and we would definitely recommend Fiji and the Beachouse as your next holiday destination. Even though from time to time we were ...

Following on Captain Cook's Footsteps

... quality of the CD player, she put up a enchanting dance with elegant gestures telling the story (presumably religious, but it could have been anything else, that's how elegantly she danced). And talking about this dancer, one thing that caught our attention throughout Fiji is how beautiful the young Fijians are. While not particularly tall, they have very well-proportioned bodies (the boys do play a lot of Rugby and all the young in the village did play ...

Sharks: real ones, no cage, just the adrenaline

... there: close and huge: silver-, black-, whitetip, reef and nurse sharks and also the bull sharks. They do not attack humans if they are not hungry. Just once in a while by accident. When they mistake a surfer for a fish. The bulls have pups. And they are dangerous: they do not know yet that the humans do not taste so good and they go crazy on the smell of blood. I am happy with my shark dives. It was worth the drive. Unfortunately, the pictures ...

Driving in Fiji

... taxes and fees. We do not mind the local fee: it goes to the commune, who refunds the fishermen for not fishing at the dive sites. The dive shop is at the resort: http://www.lagoonresort.com/ I go to the bathroom in the hotel and it looks big time like it HAS been the place to be 10 years ago. The bar, in a boat, is no longer there and the boat is falling apart. We decide to go to another resort ...

Two Week-Long Stays (take 2)

... is a little late, and I don't have much of anything so I simply find enjoyment in the company of others and in my surroundings.

I sometimes wonder who's more free: those who can afford all the things they want at the cost of increasingly stressful and demanding positions at work which require attention all the time, or those who can't afford most of the things they want but are able to spend time with family and friends and enjoy the essence of life.

FIJI!

... member of staff, making everybody join in with a dance and it was quite embarrasing! We all had to stand man -woman - man - woman, even if you didnt know the people you were stood between, hands on hips, and lots of bum wiggling amongst tribal dancing! Embarrassing doesn't even describe it but it was all good fun and everyone joined in! Yesterday we took a bus journey into the posher part of the main Island called Denerau where we went to Hard Rock ...

Working in Fiji for 4 months & playing Rugby

... the main island to the Ysawere islands to get away from the hustle and bustle of the capital. The islands were always beautiful and some of the snorkeling was very good with the clear blue waters and beautiful sands. Final thoughts on Fiji I absolutely loved working in Fiji. I really liked the people (apart from the ones who broke into my house), I loved the weather, the beaches, the rugby culture out there and the general chilled outness of it. I would defiantly recommend it to anybody.

Going Local

... who were on an island maybe 100 feet out in the lagoon, do a range of war and other dances. Of particular interest, however, was a guide who turned out to be the cousin of the pastor of the Methodist Church on the Coral Coast. He gave us very valuable insights into the warrior nature of early Fijian society and of the concept of cannibalism as a way of acquiring the “power” of an enemy. We also learned that the clan ...
