I expected today to be quiet and uneventful. Thought I was being clever, and checked the weather in Tuscaloosa and Hot Springs before we left. Both had little or no rain in the forecast for today. Part of the way we travelled on a “Scenic Highway” marked “The Trail of Tears”, in recognition of the route taken by the Cherokee Indians on their forced march from their home in the eastern forests of the North Carolina to the barren western plains of Oklahoma. A low point in American history. But in a sense the road was also a modern day trail of tears.
