Drums, Drag Queens and The Beatles

So we went to a few blocos, The Drag Queen one was my favourite, of course. It went right along the beach front with the Drag Queens leading the way. And people in the apartments above sprayed water on everyone to keep us cool.

The morning on Cocacabana Beach then CARNIVAL baby
... and the arena is 1 km long. Makes you feel for the ladies in sky high shoes that samba the entire way down there and not even in a straight line - they go from one side of the arena to the other so they can shimmy in front of each grandstand several times. (Grace, you would have loved the shoes!)

We could just imagine the huge piles of loot filling up the favela from that first night (..and the influx of travel insurance claims!). Theresa naar het centrum bracht, en ik herkende de wijk nog precies; de boekenstallen, de oude winkelstraten met de gezellige koffietentjes en ik ben ook nog even binnengelopen bij de zaak waar we onze t-shirts hebben laten drukken om te zien of er nog iets leuks tussen zat.
