... destroyed over 70% of its buildings and killed 185 people. It is partly a ghost town of flat open spaces with piles of rubble being cleared for future development. There are damaged buildings still untouched and boarded up, even four years later.

... way, which we had passed in the dark last night. We were looking for a throw-away mobile phone and Caleb had mentioned a couple of options last night. In a big, cheap, sell anything, internationally owned, chain store we found what we needed: $15 for the phone, plus $20 for a 30 minutes call top-up. However the whole transaction took forever, nearly an hour, because the technical guy was on a break and the girl, was jack of all trades ...

... making runs we pass their score only 3 wickets down and with 5 overs to spare.

After the usual speeches, drinks and convivial conversation with our opposition the convey turns for home, stopping at the Harrington hotel for an evening meal. I have the Steak & Dark Beer pie and it is equally delicious and filling. I think I am going to have to start watching the waist-line.

The Fuel Empty light showed at around 600km but I calculated the car had a range of over 830km. So at the end of the day I was literally running on Empty. At Lytteltown I got nervous about running out but there were no petrol stations. As I got closer to the airport I thought I'd may as well stick to my theory that I still had amply fuel. I was relieved when I made it to the airport hotel without having to push the car.

... a museum all about the earthquakes, and was really interesting. There were lots of photos, videos and artefacts. There were also some interviews that were very touching. 185 people died in the February 2011 quake, and 70% of the city is being rebuilt or demolished. I'm not surprise after walking around Christchurch, which feels like a city sized building site.
