Well i say goodbye to my wonderful hosts and head to the train station. The day goes as planned and i arrive into Marseille at 6pm. My host is waiting to show me the apartment.
The first day is spent close to the city as an impending storm is not for off the coast. The thunder and lightening is awesome, and then the rain buckets down. Least i managed to find ...

Decided to take a morning excursion to Cassis even though we planned to disembark a day early in Marseille - turned out to be a great decision as we probably would not have bothered to get ourselves there on our own, & it is a beautiful town! Especially loved the little boat trip to three of the closest calanques. Soaked up the sunshine at a waterside café then wandered through the narrow back streets & through the bustling local market.

By the priest no less. I slipped a couple of photos in as we headed to the door. Then I told God I ...

... far to walk (never mind that a month later we would walk 30 kilometres in Paris in one day, without complaint). There was also a ferry service from our ship to the Toulon port for a twenty euros - which, again for some unknown reason, we decided was too expensive. We decided, instead, to make the most of this pretty little town and left the ship at about 9 am.

Approximately 150 minutes later we were back on board the ship.

... grills and shutters hitting the ground and being secured for the night. The transition from day to night sees the colourful stores and cafés disappear and replaced by rows of dull, grey reinforced metal sheets resembling a prison ward.

For a city that has such a bad reputation Video Girl and Battery Boy have loved the character and sights of the city and enjoyed the friendly company of the people they have met.
