... its administrative limits. It is the third largest urban area and metropolitan area after Paris and Lyon with a population of around 16 million! It is France's largest city on the Mediterranean coast and largest commercial port. This is not a place we could even try to take in with just a few hours. Shopping was not on our agenda today! This evening we had a special invitation to attend a get-together with the officers, staff and crew ...

Then cross town, climb the hill to le Cours Julien and you are in the East Village circa 1995: graffiti everywhere, gangs of teenagers sitting around on the ground with skateboards and dogs, crowded cafes, scruffy playgrounds. There was also a ferry service from our ship to the Toulon port for a twenty euros - which, again for some unknown reason, we decided was too expensive. We decided, instead, to make the most of this pretty little town and left the ship at about 9 am.

This weekend was so much fun! Our group had our second and final UM excursion to Marseille, and I am so glad that we ended up getting to go. There were a few complications with the logistics of the trip, so we didn't know if we were for sure going to Marseille or Avignon, but we ultimately ended up going to Marseille as a group. Marseille was one of the most beautiful places I've ever gone to, and I was truly amazed by the Mediterranean city.
