Off to Manchester after supper to be next to the airport for the early morning flight! Need to check in at 6.40 am (sigh)... But very excited to get on the way! Hoping for an upgrade due to it being my birthday (10th feb), however, will be very surprised if i get one! Fingers crossed. Etihad flight to Bangkok via Abu Dhabi ...

Today sees us leaving Witton Gilbert with Passports! Vicky took us to Durham Station and then we caught the train and bus to Manchester Airport! The whole journey went very smoothly, with the exception of lugging large cases up and down stairs at York but hey ho! Very early in Airport - 1hr before gate opened. Looking forward to being frisked by Si but he's in Teneriffe! Both well and now waiting for Gate to open and signing off for next ...

We drove out of Manchester, passed Moss Side, a Jamacian suburb, where I remembered trying to post a parcel back to Australia after our Russian trip and was astonished at the 3rd world condition. ... as the explosion went off just ahead of us around the corner.This was definitely something I would not have foreseen coming. The shockwave hit our chests and we crouched down in bomb mode thinking it was a car accident. It sounded as if a full dumpster had fallen from dump truck as it was lifting it up to empty it. It was a small bomb and no one was hurt, but it was interesting to see everyone go back to their beers as if nothing had happened. I don’t feel it ...

... very effeminate, Thai tour guide. His English was excellent and we chatted about Thailand and he told me a little about his work taking Thai tourists around England. On this trip he would be in charge of 80 tourists and was taking them to the Lake District, Chester, missing Manchester as they could not get accommodation there and instead going to Coventry, then Stratford on Avon and finally London.
