Beano character is 800 year old petroglyph shock

Having failed to get to El Malpais I knew I needed to see something other than the inside of my hotel room so I made for the Petroglyph national monument. This was my first national monument of the trip to go with my 7 national parks and my 4 state parks – not that I am counting.

I found the visitor centre and a very helpful (as the NPS rangers always are) man gave me all the gen including explaining the petroglyphs are scratched into the rock whereas pictographs are ...

Gettin' to the Airport on Time

... it was Thanksgiving morning there was barely a soul at security so I whizzed right by. And, yes, made my flight with minutes to spare. I just hope that my luggage made it on the plane!!! Guess I'll find out tomorrow morning.

Then on my flight from Houston to New York, I recognized a seminary student of mine from over 20 years ago. We had a chuckle about how we both look pretty much like ...

Wrong turn.... Right turn...

... problem would have to be fixed eventually. Well, eventually is on your way to Albuquerque.
So as I finally found Devon and John's place, outside the city and quite remote, I was relived to have gotten the car that far. I met Devon and her husband John and instantly felt at home. My dad and Devon's mom are old theater friends and I promised my dad I would visit them on the way back to Atlanta. Devon and John ...

On The Road Day 6

... New Mexico to attend free for four years. How about that.

To end my day, I headed out to Sandia peak to see the tramway. When I got there, I didn't really see what the big deal was except maybe the view when you got to the top. But the sky was clouding up and I didn't think the view would be that good. So I passed. But I didn't ...

I'm not asleep

... I had never noticed before. I was going about 15 miles faster then the speed limit, when I kept seeing something in the road. So I slowed down and realized that they were a whole lot of grasshoppers crossing this road. They were just walking across it, rather then flying into my windshield, I had hit barely any there. After I noticed them, I tried to avoid every single one. It had to be so hard to guess when a car was ...

4 Corners to Albuquerque

... of living as their ancestors did. People live this way from a conscious choice. "Acoma has always been the place where people go back," says our twenty five year old guide. She has just moved back from Phoenix and is living near Sky City. "It is the heart-center." I admit I was wrong. When setting up the Acoma's equipment leases 14 years ago, I believed the Casinos would cause a negative change in the Pluebloians lifestyle. Gambling's seedier side would ...

Piolin and Caravan for Freedom

... over in support of the caravan and the cause. People were lining the street and many of them spoke about the issues from their hearts. As we were trying to convince the crew to give me a chance to be part of all this a camera was stuck into my face. I had a good chance to tell things from my point of view. Too bad. About all I could say was hubba hubba, I was so tired, and not thinking about the points I wanted to make ...

Happy birthday to me

... me a bit jittery. On a visit to the toilet, Jay met a Navajo Indian guy, and got talking to him. He told Jay that he "didn't know drinking until he'd drunk with the Native Americans." Afraid that defeating them in a drinking contest might lead to a scalping, we kept our distance after that, though later on I met the same bloke in the toilet and he started chatting to me too. By this stage he was too wrecked to make any sense, and I was too drunk to understand him ...
