... well deserved wash. It took some scrubbing to get 5 weeks worth of dirt off him but he sparkled once we were done :)
Another longish drive got us to Arles where the plan was to stay for 2 nights as it was home to van Gogh and lots of Roman ruins. We got a good park on the Rhone River just outside the city walls but the city itself made us feel a little uneasy and something was not quite right. The place was ...
... over 1.5 million tourists each year as it is the source of a natural spring. It's wierd seeing a fast flowing river and then walking 50 metres "upstream" and there only being a trickle.. and then a bit further and no water... nothing but a big cliff straight up!
The town itself is nestled in a valley and is particularly pretty at dusk when rocks take on the colours of the sunset ...
... the old stone replaced like this. But if it wasn’t done, there would be nothing left to see! Also, who’s to say what is ‘original’ and what is not after so long a time. For a building as old as this, I believe a few renovations have taken place over the years!
Just down the street was the Theater Antique, or Classical Theater. A century ...
... not know how.
Perhaps they’ll listen now.
But what a sad story of a man impassioned by his art, yet rejected by all around him. To the point where only his brother befriended and supported him. Only selling 2 paintings during a lifetime, and even those that are given away ended up on hen-house doors and shot up by young passersby ...
... people for a cab. And waited. And waited. Finally, we got sick of waiting and I took the hotel directions over to a bus driver and via a short game of charades, got him to determine if his bus would get us to our destination. He indicated it would with a short walk, so we hopped on the bus and rode it into town. Our hótel was about a 7 minute walk from the bus stop and we entered to check in. We introduced ourselves ...
Avignon, Provence, France trockie... a pretty but unremarkable town from the slightly overcast few hours in April that we spent there. Most fun derived from Jie drooling at shoe shops but being unable to buy anything. Far more entertaining was the local vineyard visited in the afternoon - Chateau de Clapier - we rang the bell and the custodian arrived to ply us with free tastings and a description on how exactly they get the grapes off the vines (it involves a horribly ...
Avignon, Provence, France jiewu... climbing over mountains, dropping into valleys and hairpin bends so tight that I could feel Linda squeezing me tight, this leads me to another thing I noticed in France, When we stopped for fuel or to pay at the never ending toll as I left and said goodbye I was wished Bon-Route. Now I know that Bon is good ,so why are they wishing me Good route? Not bad these French people after all. The road goes through mountains then on ledges with a ...
Avignon, Provence, France 2bikersSpent two days in Avignon hitting the sites. The city is beautiful with castles and palaces! If I ever find time I will post pics! I have been having trouble with my two 4gb memory cards. They have been randomly deleting my pictures so I am now limited to my 1gb card :/ My watch face also broke, allowing it to fill with water while I was swimming. A few more casualties for the road!
