Historical Traveler Reviews Compass Point Dive Resort East End

A truly remarkable dive experience

from cmalinowski

This dive resort is every diver's dream. You stay at incredible water-front condos to start. Everything is clean and comfortable, and new from the looks of it. It was great to wake up, watch the sunrise, then go diving.

The dive operation is the best I've had. They treat you like a good friend all of the time. I was there for a week. They met me the first day and didn't forget who I was or what I liked for the rest of the week. The crews on the boats were professional, fun, and extremely hard working.

When you climbed on the boat, your gear was already set up and ready for you to inspect and dive. No lugging gear bags all over the place. They take care of, and some would say pamper, you. I believe this is the case whether you stay at compass point, or just use Ocean Frontiers as your dive shop for your trip (but I would stay at compass point).

Leaving at the end of the week was like leaving a good friend's house. You had to make sure you saw everyone to say goodbye and know that you will come back again as soon as you can.

I can't say anything bad about my experience whatsoever.

Fantastic Dive Operation and Hotel

from egp

Ocean Frontiers is an absolutely top notch dive resort.

The dive sites are fantastic. Wall dives teaming with life as deep and as far as one would care to venture. Reef dives with fantastic coral formations and an endless supply of nooks and crannies to explore. There are too many types of creatures to list but a few of my favorites were the sea turtles, big schools of tarpin, stingrays, nurf sharks and octopuses.

This dive operation pushes right past full service into the realm of pampered diver. Upon arriving at the boat the crew almost immediately learned my name, my comfort level in the water and all the nuances of my preferred equipment configuration. For the remainder of my stay every time I arrived at the boat to dive I was greeted warmly by my new friends who had taken the time to haul my gear out of the storage area and set it up perfectly ready to go. Once underway they were able to recommend fantastic dive sites based on the feedback from earlier outings. The dive briefings were professional and included well drawn maps and suggestions for both guided and and unguided profiles. During the surface intervals they provided plenty of liquids and fresh fruit while the crew swapped out tanks and ensured everything was ready for the next dive. After the dives my gear was rinsed and hung it up to dry ready to go as soon as I was. It's very relaxing to do five dives a day when all you need to do is suit up and jump in the water.

The Compass Point hotel rooms are very nice with plenty of space for several divers. A full kitchen made it easier to quickly get a bite to eat between the morning and afternoon boats. The beach is nice with plenty of lounge chairs and hammocks scattered among the shade trees. Grills are also available if you enjoy cooking out.

Go check these guys out yourself. You will not be sorry.

A true diver's paradise

from anonymous

All too often these days, those of us in service-oriented fields are not appreciated for the dedicated work we put in on a daily basis. I will be the first one to admit that I am rarely in the "we deserve a pat on the back club", but we usually are contacted only when things have gone awry.

I do, however, believe in giving credit where due, and that is what this review is about.

I recently returned back from a week with Compass Point/Ocean Frontiers and I can't say enough nice things about the suites, boats and staff. Well appointed rooms, boats are roomy with plenty of space for divers and gear; staff that is so courteous and hard-working that it should be considered illegal.

The suites are very well appointed, with full kitchens, good-sized washer and dryer, and of course full bathroom including a whirlpool tub/shower. Each suite is also outfitted with 2 TVs with satellite programming (one in the living room, one in the bedroom), a DVD player, a 6-disk stereo system, an assortment of fiction and non-fiction books as well as a copy of Scubaopoly, the Divers Alert Network version of the Milton Bradley classic, Monopoly.

When you first arrive at CP/OF, you will be assigned a rather large crate with nametag attached. You are to fill it with your non-fragile gear, and that will be the last time you really have to worry about it until you leave. You see, the OF team will have your gear set-up on your tanks when you arrive to the boat in the morning, and they will rinse it off for you and store it to dry until the next day, where they will then again set up your tank on the boat for your morning arrival.

I have to admit, not everything went according to plan. There were a time or two when the water at a few places was less than cooperative with regards to visibility or high surge. Our crew took every obstacle all in stride with a demeanor I've reserved for those who have devoted their lives to a 'higher calling'.

CP/OF was, without a doubt, the best customer oriented place I've ever had the pleasure of working with.

One slight caveat, CP/OF is very much a dive resort, not an all-inclusive "spa for the non-divers in the group" place. It's located on the far side of the East End, so it's a good 20-30 minute drive to Bodden Town/George Town/Kaibo Yacht Club. There is a wonderful Italian restaurant called Portofino's about a mile away, but little else.

To me, it was paradise. I went there to dive. If I wanted nightlife, I would have gone to the Keys or Cozumel. Don't get me wrong, there are grills up on the pool deck, and you can pretty much guarantee that there will be people up there having a good time every night.

If you want breathtaking wall dives, abundant aquatic life, great 2nd dives with more great swim-throughs (Dragon's Lair was spectacular!) than you can shake a stick at, and staff that will exceed your expectations, then CP/OF is THE resort/dive op for you.

I will be going back, I just hope it won't be too long, I miss it already.....

The very best that Cayman has to offer.

from anonymous

Outstanding hotel!!! Exotic and remote with convenience and luxury. The East End is where you can see what Grand Cayman was like before it was overrun with tourists, banks and huge, chain hotels. This resort is absolutely brand new. The rooms are gorgeous with full kitchens, Jacuzzi baths and washer dryers in the rooms. The appliances are better than I have at home.

The resort itself is on a gorgoeous, reef protected beach in an area teaming with wildlife. We found a turtle nest one morning and the Department of Natural Resouces collected the eggs for hatching and release. Very cool. The dive sites off of this resort are pristine and almost virgin compared to Seven Mile Beach and the Ocean Frontiers Dive Center - attached to the resort - is one of the very best dive centers in the world. And it sure is one of the friendliest.

When I go to Cayman I want the best diving that they have to offer and I want to avoid the cattle boats of Seven Mile Beach. I still want to have all of the good stuff that Cayman has to offer - like restaurants and shopping - but not every night. Compass point is the best place to do this. I'm definitely going back.

Diver's Paradise

from anonymous

We have stayed at Compass Point 3 times in the past 2 years and are returning again in March of 2006. It is always excellent. It would be a great place to vacation if it were a stand-alone resort - 1 & 2 bedroom suites with full kitchen & amenities. But being affiliated with Ocean Frontiers - the finest dive operation in the Caymans and one of the best in the World - makes it over the top.

The suites are spacious and clean with full electronics including stereo & dvd players. there is wi-fi hi speed internet available throughout the resort. Ocean Frontiers can burn your video or stills to CD or DVD at your request.

There are sevral restaurants within walking distance and several more within a 5 minute drive (dozens within 30 min). a grocery store is within minutes to stock your full kitchen (including microwave, oven, coffeemaker, & dishwasher).

each balcony overlooks the carribean sea and a lovely private sand beach. the beach has hammocks and bar-b-que grills for your use.

Compass Point at East End has all this and some of the best diving in the world with THE best crews in the world. i've been diving with OF for almost 10 years (30-40 trips) and they never dissappoint. full classes are available (i was advanced open water & nitrox certified with them) with excellent instruction - classes are always small and personal care is taken in all they do.

the Caymans are a delight with quaint East End being my favorite locale - the people are so friendly. never any kids begging on the streets. easy exchange rate and us dollars are accepted everywhere.

did i mention that i love this place??? Stay here once and it's not a place to revisit but more like coming back home.

Compass Point Dive Spectacular

from anonymous

When routine and fatigue dictates renewal, my first thought is my favorite getaway in Grand Cayman. Diving the waters of the Caribbean and resting my head at Compass Point is the perfect vacation. My experience begins with e-mails to Lesley to book my trip. She takes care of all my planning, airline tickets, lodging, car rental, and dive schedule for the week.

I have taken muliple scuba trips with Ocean Frontiers and was excited when they opened their on-site resort, Compass Point. Now, all I have to do is roll out of bed and out to the dock for a day of incredible scubadiving.

Steve and Mo, the owners, have it figured out. They know how to run a dive operation and more importantly, they know how to treat their guests. Each day you when you walk on to the dive boat your gear is already set for the day, you do not have to lift a finger, just dive, dive, dive. They allow you to dive your ability and use your computer, they do not regulate bottom times.

Then to return to a clean, air-conditioned, top of the line resort is icing on the cake. I was privileged to stay in the one bedroom unit within the first month of opening, I was overwhelmed with the degree of luxury they provided.

The kitchen is complete with all your needs, and a balcony to soak in the view of the Caribbean. For those who enjoy dining out, Compass Point is just a short drive to many local and upscale dining experiences.

As an avid diver, Compass Point and Ocean Frontiers is my choice for a perfect dive vacation. But, I would not hesitate to take a non-diver as a travel companion. The resort has a nice quiet beach, and just minutes to land-based activities using your rental car that came with your Compass Point vacation package.

I am looking forward to my next trip this September. I have attached some of my favorite underwater photos for a little slice of heaven on earth.

Great location, staff, diving and fantastic accommodations!

Third trip to Cayman. First time staying here (Oct 05). Surprised at how comfortable and clean the place was. Great kitchen and facilities (washer and dryer). For the money, I don't think there is a property on the island with as much value. Will definitely stay here again. Loved rolling out of bed in the morning and onto the boat for the best diving of my life. If you haven't been diving on this part of Cayman, do yourself the favor at least once. You may become hooked! We have two young daughters (5 and 2) who loved their pull-down beds and views over the water (all rooms are beachfront). Great place. Can't say enough about the staff as well. Can't wait to return. Compass Point is going to be THE place to book early. Booking our next trip soon.

Spectacular Stay at Compass Point and Diving with Ocean Frontiers

from anonymous

This was a return trip for us to Compass Point. We have traveled and dived all over the world and always return to Compass Point and Ocean Frontiers.

Compass Point Condominiums are all ocean front and just a few steps from the dive boats. Each unit has two large bedrooms with two full bathrooms. Each bathroom has a jacquzi tub and shower. Two double patio doors lead you to a baloncy just a few feet from the oceans edge. The views are spectacular!

Each unit has a full kitchen complete with dishwasher, microwave, stove/oven and full size fridge with ice maker. Each unit has a washer and dryer which is a real treat and reduced the amount of needed luggage.

Diving on the East of Grand Cayman is second to none. Ocean Frontiers does an exceptional job of caring for their dive guests. Personal service is their mission in insuring your stay is exceptional is their goal.

Compass Point has a nice ocean side pool with a large lounge deck. Beautiful beach with plenty of beach chairs to allow for a casual day. You may even have a barbeque right on the beach!

Several good restuarants are within a fewminutes drive of Compass Point. I would recommend you rent a car during your stay and check out some of the sites around the island.

We will definitely make another trip to Compass Point and Ocean Frontiers. They are both second to none!

Compass Point Dive Resort

from Islaholic51

An excellent place to stay if you are a diver or not. We went on 4 dives and Compass POint takes very good care of you. Diving was great but the quantity of fish was lower than off of Isla Mujeres.

The suite was lovely and well kept. We didn't even expect a laundry in the room!

Grand Cayman is excellent all the way around but pricey. Hell is a great place to visit and send postcards but lookout for the cruise ships that come in during the week in Georgetown. It is a real zoo then.

Islanders are very friendly and helpful but the cruisers are snobs! Get to know the local places to eat or you will pay too much. Myrtle's on 7 Mile Beach was great.

Stay on the East side (Compass Point. the Reef or Marritts(sp?)) It is quiet and more sane. All in all, I think we (me and 2 kids) made the right choice as to where to stay and who to dive with. Compass Point is HIGHLY RECOMMENED!

Wonderful place to relax

from tealisreal

Very nice, clean condo. It is all new and upgraded. The staff is very nice and helpful. We understand it had great diving, so stay a few days. You must rent a car to get to the East end. We were moved here from 7mile beach and our travel agent did not tell us how far it was. The taxi ride was $60.00 US one way. No stores around, but a great 15 min. walk to Portofinos was worth it. The food is five star. Good breakfast at the Reef Resort about 3miles further. We really loved our short visit.

Not such a great start to our trip ... Richard recovering from cold/flu and Kate laid up in bed with it and only now about to venture out of the apartment !! We just got back from Seven Mile Beach, which is about 40 minute drive west of here (you have to lookout for crabs crossing the road!). Wow! Really beautiful beach, pristine white sand and turquoise sea, v quiet too. The bit of beach we went on was called Cemetary Beach, as is right next to the Cemetary, bit macabre. Will have to upload a couple of …
