Pre-race speeches included one by the mayor, and acknowledgment of the international field representing some 16 countries. Hopefully I wasn't the United States best chance for glory that day! The race began with a short fireworks display -- easily the most elaborate start of any race I've run to date. This would be the last good impression for the remainder of the race.
