We were debating whether to do a Mt Etna tour but in the end decided to give it a miss as it was expensive and we weren't guaranteed on seeing much depending on the conditions up the mountain.
Instead we caught a train ...

After our stay in Siracusa, we drove to Agrigento, on the south coast of sicily. Stunningly beautiful blue sky and blue Mediterranean waters set off the sight of magnificent Greek Temples onthe ridges overlooking the bay. Built in the period of around 565 BC these beautiful structures have withstood the ravages of invasions by Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans, Normans ...
Agrigenta, Sicily, Italy, Sicily, Italy mandjcann... met, but we had been in contact recently by e-mail. They were happy to meet us, they took us to visit several elderly cousins, who spoke only Italian, but whose happiness to meet us was shown by kisses, hugs, tears, and abundant sweets and espresso coffee. We will hold memories of these dear people in our hearts.

With our bus leaving at 11.30 to Catania we decided to get one more arancini and do one last sweeping tour of the market, that move nearly cost us our seat, OK we were the last ones to get a seat but we didn't get to sit together, mind you we didn't have to stand for the 3 hour journey, so things could have been a lot worse.
Catania is a laid back city, much of it is constructed from the black lava which poured down the mountain and engulfed the ...

... the world. The outside walls utilise the columns of the original Greek temple of Athena, then it was progressively built on and became Norman in appearance, with substantial use of mosaics. After the massive 1693 earthquake it was extensively rebuilt and a new baroque facade was added. After the Roman conquest Sicily became the main area for providing wheat and was known as the granary of Rome. Significant deforestation occurred and Siracusa slowly lapsed into obscurity, as Palermo became ...
