... Junction Creek. It's so amazing that a campground in such a prime location (about 4 miles out of Durango) is always half-empty. After setting up our tent and eating and drinking our spoils from the farmers market, we drove into the mountains to Silverton and the trailhead. A few times during the morning, Allison reminded me that it was her birthday weekend, usually in order to get her way. I asked her if she was gonna be a ...

Telluride, Colorado, United States clay_holsey... was both very
interesting and sad. I loved seeing the Indian head dresses made of
feathers and playing in a Tipi (teepee). I also loved the cradle
boards that the babies were strapped to for travel on their mothers
back. They had beautiful bead work to determine if the baby was a boy
or girl. The boys had geometric shapes and the girls flowers and
such. I was sad to see how the early US government broke their
promise to the Indians 4 times in various ...
Ouray, Colorado, United States bengygi... At the Douglas County fair the pig barn is HUGE! And each FFA chapter has it's own area.' or 'At the Douglas County fair the midway is paved' or 'At the Douglas County fair the exhibit buildings are huge!' Silas seems to think that I'm just remembering it as being huge since it was the fair we went to when I was growing up. But the 2 years that I raised pigs for FFA I stayed at the fair the whole week and the last time I was there I think ...
Telluride, Colorado, United States 78ers... view of mountains in 3 directions. Ethan, Connie and Wade drove up to Yankee Boy Basin (4 wheel drive mountain pass) while Antoinette and Amanda relaxed at the hotel. Nice side trip. Would love to go back and check out some of the other mine sites and tunnels. More pics to come later.
Ouray, Colorado, United States awhidden... we had stayed in a campground just outside of town, so we decided to go there to see if we might be able to get a spot. Well, we didn't end up finding it... maybe it was further out of town than we remembered. We found a day use area near town and considered staying there anyway, but we finally decided that it might be easier to just park in the parking lot that Silas had 'lived' in in his bus while he was working at the mountain, and just sleep in the car. I think ...
Telluride, Colorado, United States 78ers... showed us the tools they used to mine and basically the workday of a miner. The mine had been mined for silver, gold, copper, among other metals. The guide told us that it never really was a good mine as it didn’t have enough of the minerals to make money. Our guide had been a contractor and had worked in the mine briefly.

Silverton was a cute little mining town and we ...
Silverton, Colorado, United States gringowithdrawlDay 3: Durango to Silverton on the Narrow Guage Railway, (overnight in Cortez) We checked out of the grand old General Palmer at the crack of dawn, and caught a vintage steam locomotive in the rain to Silverton on the narrow guage railroad. The ride was great fun for all of us, and especially so for Keith, who is a real railway buff. We all had assigned seats in one of the covered ...
Silverton, Colorado, United States kitkrozserWOW! Today was amazing! Amped and excited to get on the mountain, we hit the slopes around 10am, even after our late night arrival. The snow was amazing. Overnight it snowed about an foot and all our runs had fresh powder. The temperature stayed under 32 the whole day so there really was no slush or any ice of any kind. The sky was clear, couldn't ask for any more. Check out the pictures to ...
