... us about the difficult situation of farming in NZ, the country's second largest industry only recently overtaken by tourism, which has taken a turn for the worse in recent years. Whilst previously stereotyped for being a land full of sheep there were an impressive 70 million of the wooly things in the mid 80s. That number has significantly reduced in recent years with a move to dairy farming making milk the country's greatest export. However like the UK ...

... didn't need to worry. We then got our things ready, checked out and got breakfast and did some last minute clothes washing at the hostel. Aside from fantastic food options, we indulged in a tour of the Weta Cave. Weta is the extremely clever special effects and physical props development company behind Lord of The Rings, The Hobbit, Spider-Man, Planet of the Apes, King Kong, District 9, Tin Tin, and the upcoming Mad Max series. We had an hour-long tour of the prop shop, where ...

I stayed in a suburb south of the city centre, just about 15mins drive into the CBD. Liz and Gordon were great hosts and it really 'came home to me' that I was in an earthquake zone when Gordon gave me the ‘run throu’ of what to do, should an earthquake start!! The last time I was in Christchurch in 2003, so the city as you will imagine is very different following the earthquakes in 2010 and 2011. It is very sad to see the devastation, but the spirit of the ...
