Aquatic antics

... t necessarily categorize as a fear but it certainly brought some adrenalin flowing back in those places it hadn’t flown in a few months. I remember going out on the boats as a kid with Dad when I was so small I still had that ity bity red and black life jacket which I’m pretty sure now wouldn’t even fit over my head and going on diving/camping trips during the summer and most of all the weird and wonderful treasures brought up from the depths of the Atlantic ...

Wrapping up in Cairns!

... we hung out until the wee hours...it was lots of fun!
On Saturday, Bre and Glenn took us to Mareeba...it's about one hour west of Cairns and is where Bre grew up! They say it's where the rainforest turns into the outback so it was cool to see a new landscape! We stopped at a little market on the way there where they sell produce that is native to these parts...beautiful pineapples, watermelons, dried mango (it's not mango season right now), whole macademia nuts ...

Cairns Day 89

... from working in the army. The weather keeps getting hotter the nearer we got to Cairns, the sun if so fierce because of the blue skies and lack of shelter, although its not a bad thing i suppose! I can't believe its the middle of the winter over here!! In the evening I met Nadia, Lucia, Jenny and Rafa, they were staying in the same hostel as me!!! Cool!
Kuranda - Cairns and Leaving Queensland

Beachcomber or Beachbum?

... She is our age and is a sweetheart. She lives with her boyfriend, Glen, who is a zoologist and works in fisheries. In fact, he is breeding some clown fish as a work experiment in the shed, so I can go see Nemo whenever I please! Ok back to our place...we have our own room at Bre and Glen's house, which is very spacious. They have two lovely dogs, Allie (short for Alaska) and Bundy, and they are so fun! It's nice to be around dogs again! The house is about a 15 minute walk ...

Change of plans

When I arrived in Cairns I was feeling down. Feeling a bit lonely, and tired of travelling, and not looking forward to having to find more work to support my travels again. But, I was looking forward to diving on the Great Barrier Reef. Unfortunately, when I arrived in Cairns I was also feeling sick; I had a cold, and much to my disappointment, was not able to go on the dive trip that I had booked. So things were not ...

Stranded!!!!!!!!!!!!!!- Alice Springs to Cairns

... hit by a devastating cyclone in the 70s. The biggest and more devastating bombing in 1942 some named 'The Pearl Harbour' of Australia, because there were more bombs dropped in this raid than in the Pearl Harbour raids. The city had to be re-built after the cyclone and most of the residents were evacuated out whilst the city was reconstructed. In the museum we got to listen to a cyclone in a little pitch black room, scary stuff! On display in the museum was a famous Northern ...

We are ready to leave Carins now. Its been great. Weve had some laughs, seen some sights, been getting fit and got most of the boring stuff organised. Weve hand fed kangaroos, weve swam with techno fishes, weve eaten barramundi and kangaroo sausages. weve walked for miles along the shore and seen loads of wildlife (in the bars here on a friday night). weve had a good time but tis time to move on. As much as we are relishing every moment of (not ...

Cairns: Diving the Legendary Great Barrier Reef

... ensure safe diving were absolutely impeccable compared with anything I had previously seen. We had to both sign out and sign in before and after each specific dive, writing down our bottom time and maximum depth. Our dive times were markedly shorter than in Thailand because there is a law in Queensland that says a diver must return to the boat with 50 bars of air left in his or her tank. We would normally began our safety stops and ascent with 50 bars left in Thailand. There is ...

... very black in colour. Saw some flamingos as they have pink heads but their bodies are grey. There is virtually no radio or TV stations since we left Cairns due to the flooding. Rockhampton is know as the beef capital of Australia, and the Tropic of Capricorn runs through this city of approx. 66,000. Here we stopped in the park for our lunch and it isn't raining so we took advantage of this fact. We drove on to Bororen for the night and it has finally stopped ...
