Beach and rain forest

Up at sunrise and had breakfast before dropping sabrina off for whitewater rafting. Did another rainforest walk hoping for a cassowary... no luck. Had a swim before a 4km hike up a mountain, again in cassowary territory, but no luck. Great view of the city... if there werent bush fires everywhere. Lazed on the beach and did ...

Back on the coast, east coast!

... and then we headed off to a National park on the outskirts of town called Bowling Green Bay, not resembling much like a bowling green, but very nice set in a forrest, with wobbilies ( wallabes) and wild turkeys running around, there was even turtles in the creek!

Next morning we were off into town and found a great caravan park, right on the water front, we booked in for three days ...

Koalas and sea kayaking

... We didn’t see any, but did manage to see a couple of possums a bit later on – they were just sitting on the garden fence. Very cute with their big eyes. They didn’t seem to be afraid of us, just curiously stared back at us as we looked at them.

(Leg seems a bit better today, so hopefully although it is still swollen, it is sorting itself out).

Tuesday 4 August 2009

Up early again as we had to pack before setting off ...

Ab in den Sueden - von Cairns nach Airlie Beach

On the home stretch...

... night was Sausage Sizzle night with the added bonus of live music – a quirky mix of country & western, rock n roll and, surprisingly, opera. Tony’s version of Nessum Dorma sent shivers up the spine and brought the house down. Annie told some very funny jokes and warned us beforehand that if we didn’t laugh, she wouldn’t clean the toilets. We have loved staying here but we are off tomorrow to Cairns for our final farewells as we leave on Thursday – sob.

It's Magnetic!

... So I booked the cheapest one I could find which meant getting up at 3am to get the shuttle to the airport so we could leave at 6. I was in Townsville by 8, got to the ferry by 8:30 and was at my hostel shortly after 9am. Now, I'm sure you all know this is usually WAY too early to check in anywhere, but as luck would have it, the space I had booked was open because the people had just checked out.

I spent two nights on ...

After Whitsundays we went back to Airlie Beach a had some wicked nights out. Unfortunately we had drunken old traveller men for roommates. They didnt exactly speak very good English, but in the end we taught them some drinking games and was quite funny. Woke up to a giant snake outside our room in the morning : S
Yesterday we got a ferry to Magnetic Island and I went snorkelling. Here the coral is so ...

The Attraction of Magnetic Island

... cool and there were a couple fresh out of the pouch and a couple with there feet still hanging out. After a 20 minute ferry ride we were there and I started to meet lots of interesting people right away. There are a load of people from the UK and Ireland backpacking but I've met people from all over the world already. The hostel is pretty cool, it basic accommodations but its located right on the beach with a pretty amazing ...
