We had also passed several empty properties where the homes had clearly been destroyed in the war, some places just had overgrown weeds and trees with little evidence of the houses that had stood there. We spent our whole time on Lopud in this bar, chatting away and enjoying the view of the sea as we were sat right on the waterfront.     ... was similar to a townhouse and had one large bedroom and a small kitchen and bathroom. We had our own little patio and garden which butted up against the city wall. The patio was covered by a thick growth of grape vines. Many plump clusters of green grapes were consumed during the next four days. We really enjoyed our stay there and felt it was a deal at $115 per night.

    ... They let EVERY other car go until we were the last ones left. They wheeled over a table and asked us to pull out our luggage. Our luggage was everywhere... We live in this van! I think they realised and just asked us if we had anything to declare. After that, they let us go (at about 7.45am) and we were on our way to find Banje Beach. We got there nice and early... And it was already hot! We splurged on loungers on the private half of the beach ...

    There is one two lane road that winds along the coast between Split and Dubrovnik. Along this road one must stop several times for borders. There's a tiny bit of Montenegro that cuts across Croatia, so one must stop there for a passport check. Then, several miles later, one must stop again for the exit check. Of course this means that there is yet a third stop to be made: Croatia's own border entry.
