... as security detail for their national rugby team when they were in Dunedin for the World Cup in 2011...neither of which formed an overly favourable, nor, as it turns out, accurate impression! All the people I came into contact with during my five days in Italy were amazingly friendly, and they certainly know how to live well...good food, good drink...and plenty of it! My first stop was Pisa, and started with the relatively unique experience of walking from the airport ...

... also termed Padua, a modest-size city about 40 km west of Venice, to see St Anthony’s Basilica and Giotto’s frescos in the Scrovegni Chapel. At the suggestion of our Untours host, we took a bus to Padova in order to see the many elaborate villas that lay between Venice and Padova. Following a brief lunch in a nearby park, our party was given entrance to the Chapel for a period of 20 mins to view the frescos…. not nearly enough time! ...

... double grrr!!), but it was a sight we will remember for a long time. Jane got a couple of shots and her battery died too. Guess we've been doing too much snapping :-)

At some stage during the night, Jane misplaced the keys to her suitcase lock (we lock it up with the laptop inside it), so we had to wait for the concierge to send someone to break it open. It was well after 11 when we got to bed. All part of the adventure!

... the time we got on the bus to go back, it was starting to get sunny! I'd also hoped to stay into the evening to see it all lit up at night but I couldn't persuade my very hungover fellow travellers so I will definitely have to come back. It would be great to explore more of Italy soon. I'd love to see cinque de terres, lake Garda and Rome too... So many paces to see, so little time!!! The drive out of Italy and through Austria to Munich ...

... eventually work out the correct way to go (no thanks to Timmy) and arrived at our new site. It was a really nice one. Its funny how quickly your contentment is based on certain facilities that you take for granted in everyday life. We found ourselves being thrilled by the fact a toilet had a seat and toilet paper. That there was handsoap. That there was actually a free standing toilet rather than just a hole in the ground. Based on our new criteria, this ...
