Island Hopping in Venice
... March. Boy was I wrong, as the vaporetti I was hoping to get on filled up and we had to wait a half hour for the next one. The funny thing that happened though., right after that vaporetti left, a private small boat pulled up to the dock - like a taxi and offered rides to people to Venice for 10 euros a head. A good 20 people took him up on it, and you know he's made his day's wages right then and there. Not sure if it's legal, yet if the buses only run ...

... in the basilica but that doesn't quite stop people and no one came around telling them "no photos".
The Venetians love their gold in decor as the Doge's Palace was next. 8 euro to go in with the Rolling Venice Card (get this if you're 29 and under - cheaper transport and other things). We finally got up to leave, and then they came up with the bill. At least we didn’t have far to walk back to our ...

... Lido, the strip of swanky island that protects Venice from the Adriatic Sea. We walk across the island from the vaporetto stop to find the free beach (most of the beaches here are owned by the swanky hotels). We spread out the small Air Berlin blanket that we have been dragging around under a walking bridge to secure a bit of shade, then head for the water. The beach is beautiful: fine sand, lots of whole shells, water very warm and shallow, no waves; we can go far ...
