Paris to Cotonou

... ring road (the periphérique) and quickly on my way to the airport. Arriving about 2 hours before the flight, I dropped the rental car and headed to terminal 2C. I wasn't sure that was the proper terminal, my ticket didn't say, but it was the point of departure for my previous flights to West Africa, so I assumed it would be again - correctly as it turned out. The Air France agent who handled my check-in was particularly kind and went out of ...

Arrival

I had a long connection in Paris and spent much of the time people watching.  There is a separate terminal for flights departing for Africa and it definitely had a different feel.  The people were dressed much nicer than I had expected, and this came as a surprise.  I was so careful to not wear anything nice that I ended up feeling underdressed in my jeans, t-shirt, and sweatshirt.  For many on the flight, because flying is so expensive, it is a ...

... combination to our viewing pleasure. Outstanding! Unfortunately, I was only given 48 hours to leave Benin t**ritory, so I had to step it up and duly throttle towards Cotounou. I managed to hit the bord** that same day, towards 16h00 but decided not to crossov** to *****ia for I was only given 7 days in this country and I had to use them wisely and that didn't include wasting my first day with only a couple of hours left of sunlight. Asked for p**mission to ...

Arrival at Pobe

... a very wet and damy day, so my host family didn't end up making it (it is common knowledge in Benin that when it rains, everything shuts up and nobody travels). There were also lots of television cameras milling about, and apparently there were many clips shown on the television. That actual ceremony started at 9am and lasted for about 3hrs, It was lots of speeches, mostly in French. There was also speeches in some of the many different local ...

... know the word for 'wall'. However, to my delightful surprise on friday afternoon I found out that I hap jumped up to 'Intermediate High' (which means I surpassed the required level of 'intermediate middle'). Unfortunately not everyone in our group was as lucky, and two people need to take another interview next thursday where they have an opportunity to reach their required level so they can be allowed to swear-in. Of course, we're all ...

They seemed to go down quite well, and I c**tainly think they appreciated the gesture. Thursday, with the homologue being late (something we've learnt to expect as being totally normal, it's 'Beninese time'), I rode with B**nadette (my homologue) by car on the asphalt road (I say 'THE asphalt road', because th ...

Watching the weeks fly by

... with even being able to travel down to cotonou and drop off/collect super-snail mail. Another exciting thing I found out about my post is that my area is big into the Oro Fetische (a fetish deity which has a lot to do with vodun - voodoo to you and me). The Oro is a sort of phantom that appears at ceremonies all over my area, it's very male dominated secret society stuff - and the ceremony period generally lasts for 3 weeks and it ...

Technical Visit and such

... We went and saw E who's up in a medium-sized town called Ketou, 2 hours by bush taxi from Porto Novo. E is notorious within the PC for being the tallest AT 6'7''. With K being a few inches shorter than I am, we made quite the sight trundling about the town for a few days. The drive up was fairly eventful, with various types of car trouble, and a combination of paved and dirt roads. The most exciting thing was that we passed by Pobe, so ...
