      ... through the increasingly scenic Tuscan countryside before climbing a dramatic hill to Montalcino, and lunch at a winery (Poggio Rubino). We got a great, detailed, animated spiel from the winemaker (who was American). He had us in the forest crushing up wild herbs to taste the local flavours. I think he was a bit taken aback when he found out we hadnt even heard of his pride and joy (Brunello).

      ... where an American couple saw me drenched and offered me a poncho they'd just bought for only €5 from the street merchant. A bit late buddy but thanks and here's a tip for you, don't walk behind a street stall during or after rain. It's quite cool outside tonight so when we head out for dinner soon, it will be a pleasant change to wear long pants although the shoes I would have been wearing with the pants will be drying out for a couple of days.       Geoff was pleased to find a specialist pen store where he could get a particular pencil he likes to work with at S fraction of the price they cost in NZ - mind you if you add in the airfare it's still cheaper back home but not nearly as exciting buying one in Auckland as compared to Florence.
