    The weather had been okay in Paris, I mention the weather as I was hoping it was going to be good so that we'd see the impressive French/Italian Alps. As we headed past the flat agricultural fields of France the clouds started showing up, last year we'd been lucky to see how impressive the alps were but I had a feeling we werent going to be so lucky this time.     Barbara was excited to finally be in Italy. But she never dreamed she would walk to Italy! The downhill to Refugio Elisabetta was pretty easy and through yet another gorgeous valley. We arrived mid-afternoon. The name of the place made me think of my mother a bit. Wish she was here.

    ... and most of them are passing us on the trail.. grrrr.

    We've established a routine now of sharing a nice cold beer at the end of each day's long hike. Dinner was excellent - very tender beef and a nice custard for dessert. We sat next to a French woman who tried very hard to use her limited English, which was endearing but made for a very slow tortured conversation. I ended up going to get my smart phone which had a translation app (very handy!).

    ... they bought out candles, not to be romantic, they were running low on electricity! For the same reason we had no lights in our cramped dorm rooms, so we had to undress by headlamp. They had no wastebaskets and refused to take any trash because it was too hard for them to haul away, the location being so remote. Too add insult to injury, it was one of the most expensive refuges (about $135 for the two of us).
