Well it has been a long time coming but we finally are off to Greece. We had planned a trip to Greece in 2007 when Pfizer closed the Ann Arbor site so our trip had to be postponed. Our good friend Jim has come for a visit and during his stay we joined up with Beth and Adam and the five of us were on EasyJet and off to Athens for a long weekend. Upon landing in Athens airport we hopped on the metro and were off to our apartment in downtown Athens. The metro in Athens was finished for the Olym...
Athens, Attica, Greece theskinnersSunday morning we were up and off to see more of the ancient finds of Athens. The Archeological Museum and many other sights are free to visit on Sunday so we had lots to do. After making our way through the metro we had a great visit at the National Archeology Museum. When done with this we were back on the metro and headed for the Agora. This was an ancient meeting place and later a market place. The ruins here remind me of the Roman forum in Rome. At this point we were feeling hungry so w...
Athens, Attica, Greece theskinners... the riots took place and we sat and had a drink in the square there were smack heads, drunks and every kind of vagabond you could imagine but it was fun watching them falling over and being on another planet and they did not hassle or bother us. So off we went on a pub crawl around the student bit it was really nice apart from one jazz place that charged us 10 euros for 2 pints of lager madness soon left there and on to Mcdonalds ...
Athens, Attica, Greece traceybelle... down early in the morning we therefore had a transfer from airport to hotel all set. We didn't really want to waste booking into a hotel early in the morning so we decided to chill in the hotel lobby til sunrise. Got to catchup on all the news from Otto with her 3 weeks stay in Italy, and I got her up to speed with the monotonous work/eat/sleep pattern of London.
Let the adventures begin. We decided to head into central Athens for sunrise, our aim to see ...
... that they are going to have to go through ice cream detox for the next few days! It is hard to write exactly the feelings that we have about our friends heading home. We had such a great time with Alex and Heather (and baby Cabanas). However, we know we will see them again soon. Alex and Heather, if you are reading this...know that tears fill Jana's eyes and both of our hearts are full of rejuvenation! We had a GREAT time with you guys, as usual ...
Athens, Attica, Greece laytonandjana... was there last. She made Jenn take a picture of her in the same spot that she had 2 years ago when she was there during study abroad. What was a little disappointing was the acropolis museum was closed because they built a new one that still is not open. 2 years ago Jill loved going from Greece and the acropolis to the British Museum in London a little bit later and seeing the freize that the British currently own. Not being able to ...
Athens, Attica, Greece jjberttravels... the plane, suddenly they started taking the baggage out of the plane, and the pilot announced that the plane was broke and we had to switch to a new one. Whew, so a couple hours later we were finally airborne headed for Athens. We land at about 2:30am local time, and since not much is happening at this hour, I curl up on an airport chair and doze until about 6am. I’m feeling kind of grungy, tired, and stressed by the time that I hop on a bus towards ...
Athens, Attica, Greece robconr... out so I was also able to take some pictures with my cell phone. Since it looked like it was going to stay cold through the 28th, we rented a car. This was a very special car. It had a soft top, but it was so torn up that they used scotch tape to attach it to the vehicle. The good news is that we were given a roll of tape.........just in case. We drove to Fira (the capital) and did some wandering around and shopping. We also had the ...
Santorini, Greece pmontap... done didn't detract much at all from the beauty of the site. Our pass included four other ancient sites around town, and a couple museums, which we took the rest of the day to enjoy. Terri's favourite part of the trip was going to the "Poet Sandalmaker", a guy who, like the name implies, makes sandals and writes poetry. For a surprisingly low sum, he'll make anyone a custom pair of sandals fitted just to their feet. He's got a master's degree in art from ...
Athens, Greece where2now... attraction of Athens, given its cultural and historical significance, as well as its dominating position within the city. With its dominating position, the Acropolis commands a 360 degree view of Athens. Athens didn't look like a pretty city from the ground, and the panaromic view from the Acropolis just served to confirm that. However, before we reached the Acropolis after wandering through the streets of Monastiriki and Plaka, we tracked down a pretty little village called ...
