... serves traditional Romanian food. I had a soup with cow stomach in it. It was good as long as you didn't look at the pieces. It looked like it had little white suction cups on it. The chicken dish was really good and for desert we had what looked like a donut covered in cream and berries. After that Dan, her husband, picked is up and took us back to their place. Similia made some mamaliga, which is a corn flour mixture with egg and butter. Then you mix ...
Brasov, Transylvania, Romania kateb75... on the main street called something like Sangiamo's. Unfortunately they had no sarmale so I was forced to pick another meal and decided on the grilled pork with apple sauce. Be warned that apple sauce was not what I pictured and instead was some sort of cream sauce with a few sliced apples in it. Very good but not the north american apple sauce that I was thinking of. Then I called it a night and tried to rest my poor feet, as tomorrow would be another full day.
Brasov, Transylvania, Romania amykclancy... Got into Brasov nice and early and after some slightly dodgy directions from the web or maybe slightly dodgy counting by us we found our hostel. The girl was a little busy and said "sorry I am upset right now" but leah soon had laughing and smiling without any idea why (she has this affect on people). After waiting a while in the lounge she rushed us through orientation which was fine as we wanted to visit a mountain gear shop which we thought might close at 2. We ...
Brasov, Transylvania, Romania leahandgreg... it was published in 2004. Not a problem. Yet. Our first stop was the Biserica Neagrã (Black Church) which is the largest Gothic church in southeastern Europe. Tough competition, too. I will admit it was great to be back touring churches and town squares and seeing signs not in English. Both my travel partner and I were comforted by the familiar smell and draft of cool air as we entered the doors of the Biserica. Ahhh...we are back in Europe. We have missed you ...
Brasov, Romania gr8escape... none of which I've seen). I didn't want to miss out, so I joined the crowds (or lack thereof since it is the off-season and rather cold) and visited Brasov. On the train to Brasov I met an American guy and an Australian girl who were headed to the same hostel as me. We were greeted by the hostel greeter at the bus station (since they had actually made a reservation) and boarded a bus with a Brazilian guy along with the ...
Brasov, Romania laura1... Deborah is going home this week and was saying that she phoned her mum and said that shes really going to miss it and doesnt want to go home. At which time her mum reminded her of the first day she phoned her and said she hated it and wanted to leave. So looks like Im not the only one to freak out. Krista said she felt exactly the same way and we had a good laugh about it. :-) On the bus home today i saw a couple of interesting things... Firstly, i think i saw the most ...
Brasov, Romania dicooper10Brasov is the largest town in Transylvania with just under 300,000 people. It´s also the main centre used for people looking to check out Dracula and Bran Castle. I got in very early in the morning from Moldova and into the hostel around 6:30am. They had a castle tour going out at 9:30 and I figured I would do that...by about 10am when they showed up I had hit a brick wall thanks to my three hours sleep on the bus. Instead ...
Brasov, Romania jay29... before, I was certainly not on it that day. No matter, I ended up running into a fellow Dao hosteler, Cyrill from Switzerland, and we decided on some dinner and a walk around down. We spent a nice evening chatting together, I extolled the virtues of my favorite country on earth (CH), heard about his recent 6-month trip through Asia, and then I headed back to the hostel for an early night. Well, the hostel was definitely not on that page; it seemed like there was another Party ...
Brasov, Romania calivoodoo... in all, was to impale the victim on a stake (purposely missing the spinal cord so they would last longer) and display him or her publicly to frighten his subjects into submission. Our driver took us up into the mountains and at this point the car broke down for the second time. We asked the driver what he was going to do to fix the car this time? 'I don't know'. The driver chose this time to point to a picture in a car manual and enquire where Brad thought the radiator was. After ...
Brasov, Romania brad_and_melBrasov is where all the tourists go in Romania, in the heart of Transylvania, Dracula country. So I spend a day doing that, walking through the old castle and all. But the real attraction for me was just seeing a country in the heart of Europe that is still village-based and peasant-based, with lots of arts and crafts ...
