... bread, cheese and sausage and had a picnic on top of the Col du Lautaret.

We then drove across the Alps again this time via Galibier and the Telegraphe where Mich pulled the pin on driving after seeing tyre tracks that lead over the edge of the narrow road.

More on Galibier tomorrow as I ride it in the opposite direction on the classic Telegraphe/Galibier 35km climb.

Finally some sunshine, well at least a peek through the clouds every now and then. Ready to ride at 5.30am and the night clerk forgot to leave the key out for the shed. Another late start then I'm off to climb Col du Mollard.

Fantastic climb this one fairly long and through forest on the lower slopes and wildflowers above the cloud line. I was a little lost for a while just a little, stupid Garmin! But soon was back on track.

The early ramps out of St Michel on Villerzembrun were tough but it soon eased off ...

I set off at 5.30am with just a light drizzle and if you have seen today's stage of the TDF you would know it became progressively worse.

I made it to Thones climbing the Col De Bluffy however by then I was soaked through. My rain booties and gloves had given up and became water capsules, I couldn't warm up and still had to climb over 1400 metres.

Alpe D'Huez here I come!

... come all this way and not make an attempt at Alpe D'Huez. I had put on my arm warmers and rain jacket, which helped somewhat. As I left for the base of the climb, which was mostly a downhill ride of about 25km through the valley, the rain got heavy. I was building up some pretty good speed of 40+ km/h and could have gone faster but was tentative because of the wet roads. I passed through a few tunnels that were a nice break from ...
