If you love huge cockroaches, call Suite Paradise
We planned to stay at Poipu Sands through Suite Paradise for seven nights. After 4 nights I opened the wet bar area doors to find NINE HUGE COCKROACHES, some dead, some still alive. My husband caught them while I called the desk and they told me they would SPRAY and SET TRAPS!! I have small children and this was not acceptable AT ALL. After we relocated in another hotel several hours later the Suite Paradise Manager told me she would relocate me to another room within their system. Too late. She refused to refund me for three nights and I will try to collect through my credit card company. Terrible service. If I were owners at Poipu Sands I would select a new management company and rid my peoperty of HUGE COCKROACHES and POOR MANAGEMENT.
Fantastic! wonderful! will definitely stay again
My husband and I stayed at Poipu kai resort in April 2003. The condo was sparkling clean, had a good layout, and the grounds were perfectly manicured. We were very impressed and would definitely stay there again. If you're looking for a quiet getaway to experience the beauty of Hawaii, this is for you. If you are looking for nonstop nightlife and such, then Poipu is probably not your destination. And yes, there are no air conditioners in the condos, or most of the restaurants.
Being from Texas, we didn't find this a problem, but if you are from the North, you might be uncomfortable.
Suite Paradise's Poipu Sands at Poipu Kai Resort
Just came back from a 5 night stay at Suite Paradise's POIPU KAI RESORT condo rentals at the Poipu Sands section. Initially there was a problem-checked in late & though they have a good after hrs check-in arrangement-night box-I found I was assigned a condo at POIPU SHORES-this a different resort also managed by Suite Paradise & definitely not the same, folks! Location, outside grounds&decor tacky, dingy, remote &a little scary for a woman traveling alone. Had to wait till nxt day to resolve at the check-in office-told I had been "upgraded" to an oceanfront at the SHORES-I pointed out I should have been notified of a change in my reservation-clerk quickly got me the loc at the PKR grounds w/the oceanview I reserved-was wonderful, spacious well decorated duplex w/ all amenities, clean w/lanais for both master BR & living room,well-tended landscaped grounds. Ceiling fans -no air cond-but really you don't need it. Great value at $187 per night. Did find a few teeny roaches in kitchen-single sightings but this was the only mar to an otherwise pleasant & safe stay. Check out the plate lunches -are excellent & incredibly inexpensive there's a place right on Koloa town nxt to the video store. Koloa Town
Relaxing time in paradise
I stayed 10 days in a 2 BR 2 story condo at the Poipu Sands development within Poipu Kai in late Aug 2003. Went with my girlfriend, her 15 yr old daughter, & my 12 yr old son. I paid a premium ($309/night) to guarantee a specific unit in building 5 which overlooks the ocean toward shipwreck beach. The condo was clean and comfortable, very spacious and complete, although no air cond (humid). "Poipu Sands" consists of 5 buildings with several condos in each. There was a nice pool near our building and several BBQ units, although they were a long walk. Easy parking, quiet surroundings. Constant wind off the ocean & the sound of the breaking surf from our 2 balconies, combined with the spectacular view (including gorgrous sunrises) made it a relaxing paradise. Our unit's location was one of the best in the complex, which made it worth the premium price. The condo phone has no-cost buttons that connect directly to various services for info & reservations for activities, dining, etc (at very good discounted prices) - great bonus feature. Also walking distance to beautiful walkway along the ocean shoreline, Hyatt next door also a short walk. Highly recommended for a great family vacation.
Great Accomodations For the Price!
My husband and I stayed at the Poipu Kai Resort for 10 days in July. We were very pleased with the condos we stayed in; they were spacious, clean, nicely furnished. Only 1 thing keeps me from giving the resort a perfect rating and that is the fact that we had specifically requested a unit away from the road. We had submitted this request both through our travel agent and by contacting the resort directly. We had read some commentary stating that this noisy location was the area to avoid so in the interest of enjoying a peaceful haven on this, our first trip to Hawaii, we made this request. Well, we were booked into a unit that couldn't be much closer to the road! It was also disturbing that our bedroom window was right where the parking area was, so we were bothered by guests' car horns, engines running, car alarms being activated, and voices late at night and early in the A.M. We asked to be moved. Unfortunately, they did not move us until 4 days later, which was a bit inconvenient---packing and unpacking again, but we did end up in a very quiet 1 bedroom, TWO bath unit much closer to the ocean. Easy walking distance to the Tidepools restaurant at The Hyatt for our special dinner, which was recommended by a family member. Overall, we were far from disappointed! Great rate versus what you'd pay for a hotel room at one of the neighboring resorts and we would definitely return.
Actually their units are supperior & they were quite nice and
We just stayed at the Poipu Kai with Suite Paradise and found our accommodations superb. Suite Paradise has a firm cancellation policy but it enables them to give great value with many discounted offerings and their exclusive accommodations, which are not rentable through any other firms, are vastly superior to the other rental lodging at Poipu Kai. We know that to be true since our friends stayed in the units of another rental company at the same resort and had a shoddily maintained condo while ours was sparkling clean, well furnished and had many extras we do not often find in vacation rentals. I thing the person whining about being charged a $40 cancellation fee could not have not really listen or read the very clear policy that comes in every communication we received from Suite Paradise and is shown in full on their web site too.
Best Deal Around
My wife and I stayed their during our honeymoon in Sept 02. The property is very nice and well kept. We rented an Ocean view unit which put us about 200 yards from Ship Wreck beach. The Ocean view units sit on the side a gently sloping hill with their balconies facing the ocean. From those balconies you can see and hear the ocean. Ship Wreck beach is very intense because the waves are constantly hammering the shore and rocks. The power and force of the waves is awesome. You could spend hours just sitting on the beach watching the waves. You will not be snorkeling on this beach, but you can wade in the waves a bit. To snorkel you will have to go to the other side of Poi Pu beach, which is a couple blocks away. Poi Pu beach is a very nice with calm water and beautiful reefs. The condos had their own private pools and community gas grills in the picnic area next to the pool.We reserved a one bedroom ocean view unit, but were given a two bedroom unit. It was huge. It had private balcony off the master bedroom and the living rooms. Along with a kitchen and two other bathrooms. The unit had a washer and dryer which was very nice. Be prepared, these units dont have Air Conditioning. I was told Kauai doesnt do AC. Whatever that means? It can get a bit warm but it by no means ruined our trip. It does cool down enough at night to sleep comfortably. The property is located next door to the Hyatt Resort. A very nice place, but very expensive also. Since it is in walking distance you can easily walk to their restaurants.
Lacking in customer service - avoid
I am very disappointed in this place. I booked a november vacation in early June. I wrote down verbatim what the booking employee indicated was the cancellation policy as "30 days notice, you are charged $40, 15-29 days you are refunded 80%, 13 days or less no refund".I called today to cancel the reservation -a full 5 months ahead -and they have insisted on charging me the full 40. I read them verbatim what I wrote down and they still insist on charging me! I told them they were misrepresenting their policy - they did not care. They are very rude and unprofessional.Even when I told them I could not travel due to a medical problem, they still charged me. They did not even bother to at least offer me the credit for future use. I suspect that any problem you encounter with them will be met with this lack of customer service.
Fantastic Family Vacation!
We just returned from Popui Sands (part of Popui Kai) and had a fabulous time! The surf was more than expected, but was a result of a weather system that wouldn't leave. Had better body boarding at Hanalie Bay on the north side of the isalnd. However, Popui Beach was great for swimming and snorkeling. The view from our condo was fantastic, great places to shop and visit; highly recommend the helicopter tour. The kids (14 and 12) want to move there! We will certainly return, and hopefully soon.
Poipu Kai Resort was nice.
This condo was very spacious and clean. The property was well kept. It was not the newest condo around, but for the price it was alot more than I expected. We had a one bedroom condo for the two of us but we felt like it could have fit 4-6 people comfortably (if there were extra bedding). The beach was not very close...a pretty long walk, but you could drive there easily enough, if necessary. The condo had several nice pools, tennis courts, bar-b-que grills, and picnic tabels. Definitely a place to "get away from it all".

... salad bar and soup. Erin had Puhule Steak with mashed potatoes. Larry, Derek and I had one of the specials: marlin with teriyaki sauce with a side of rice or mashed potatoes. It was the best meal we have had on Kauai. We ate on the front porch and could partially see the sunset which wasn't as good as last night.
When we got back to the cottage we watched two more episodes of Doc Martin, blogged and went to bed.

I also checked out some other beaches on the south side. They were all pretty busy on this beautiful day and this area seemed very touristy with several higher-end restaurants (at least price-wise) and lots of resorts. All in all another great part of this island!
... the girls would enjoy riding around the island with the top down. Driving on the main road we couldn't help but notice the island's natural beauty which reminded us of the scenery around northern NSW, particularly around Byron. There were some really impressive and idyllic homesteads and ranches along the way. We missed a couple of turnoffs on the way to Poipu but the island is small ...
These last few weeks have been very busy. We said farewell to our Washington State friends, Gene and Cynthia, tried unsuccessfully to finish our reservations in Europe, said good-bye to our new friends, and heard our last sermon from Kahu Steve at North Shore Christian Church.

We headed back after a few minutes of patting ourselves on the back for getting this far. It was a little too early for congratulations since we were only half way done. We stopped for lunch at the tall waterfall we had seen before. We were shocked to see two people, a tourist and his guide, coming up over a hill toward us. The guide was hiking barefoot. I could not even imagine doing that.
