... became more rough with some potholes as the vegetation thinned - we were clearly above the snow line. Then a summit came into view after a small tunnel and with sheer cliffs in several directions we would need to concentrate. The sheer vistas and 360 degree views of the surrounding mountains made this optional žside trip seriously worth while. Stopping at the cairn I took many photographs and felt lucky to be on my own and not sharing either the place or the small narrow ...

... garage for Motos and Velos. Upon entering the foyer walls were adorned with bike photos (pedal bikes), B&W cycling pictures and a old bike was used as decoration. In their garage few other tasty bikes - KTM 990, Tiger 1050 Adventure (like Steven Kirks), new Kawasaki Versys 1000, and now my GS 800, each from a different European country, I felt at home right away. Today we had a 20.1km climb at 5.5%. It was overcast but thankfully the rain held off until we were arriving at the campsite. Also saw our first sign to the finish line in Nice ...

Today we went up and over the Col d'Izoard (2361m). The guidebook implies it is an easy day as it it's just 9.4km at 4.2% followed by 10.1km at 7.5%. But it was anything but. On day 8 our legs are tired so it felt bloomin hard work, but it was worth it as it is a stunning route. We have done it before from the ...

... gradually tiring from km after km of 8-9% gradient. Being savvy cycle tourists, we were only carrying the bare essentials, including 4 kilometer stone souvenirs from our previous 4 mountain passes, 2 toy cats, 3 Lego men, 4 spare breakfasts, 4 spare lunches and 2 spare dinners. Despite our savvy packing, we were once again unnecessarily weighed down by hitch hikers (flies). How dare they! I'm sure we would've been heaps faster without them... The views ...
