Do you know what we got for Christmas this year? We got fat. Extra kilograms, additional centimeters to the waist, hips and thighs...hells did we enjoy it! Of course weight gain was not at the top of our Santa wish list nor our ultimate goal of a week 'skiing' in the French Alps. Though when the local 'Spar' supermarket kindly sells you two euro french champagne (close relative of Moet) delicious jamon, cambert cheese and freshly baked baguettes it ...

Soon onto the open road, traffic was quiet and there was a cool chill in the air of the clear mountain morning, I was lucky as it was an almost cloudless sky which would result in great views and pictures from the summit. The 2500 Dutch Cyclists had started to arrive in the site and the generator for the big truck started up at 7.30 am. The ride out of the D1091 was simply superb - in fact superlatives fail to describe the feeling one gets when riding on such fantastic biking roads when surrounded by magnificent mountains - part of the Hautes Alps this is one of ...

Today we had a 20.1km climb at 5.5%. It was overcast but thankfully the rain held off until we were arriving at the campsite. Our SPOT tracker has died today, so unfortunately shows us still in Guilestre! We plan to carb load now as have a huge day tomorrow up the Cime de la Bonette (2802m), a 23.1km climb at 6.5%. Yikes. Also saw our first sign to the finish line in Nice ...

... and we very much enjoyed the 31km descent and stopping in Arvieux for a burger, salad and proper coffee! We made it to the campsite in good time and glorious sunshine so we went straight in the pool! Time to rest now as we have another big challenge tomorrow. The book describes the climb tomorrow as 'testing'. ...
