yep u can see from the title how much i loved this little town(!)... the road trip was empty on the street.. and saw sand whirly whirly... and got to pose in a stand as a man!!! and with beer...

I commence my first group tour today. Tis with Groovy grape tours or sommit like that - a bargain at $215 for transport to Alice, food and one night's accommodation (underground!) at Coober Pedy. When this compared to cost of overnight non-stop butt numbing bus journey of $199 - seems like the option was set.
Its stupid 0 clock in the mornin...

Coober Pedy is in the middle of the desert. People live here because they hope to find opals that make them rich. It's the opal rush. It can get up to 63 degrees in summer, so the people live underground.

Started from William Creek after buying some head nets for the flys. We headed up the track looking at various Ghan railway ruins. Biggest trip was a 40km round trip to Peake Station, it was a rough track but worth the trip. The terrain out to Peake Station was another moonscape. Coober Pedy the land of Opal mining, a real ********* of no where if you ask me. Good craic there all the same. Wasn't a person around so we pretty much had the place to ourselves. In saying that we stayed in a mine shaft that they had made into a hostel so it was good enough craic with the oul geezer at the front desk who whiled away the hours ...

Gps 29 00.646s 134 45.326e port augutta as the adelaidians call it wasn't much but we were impressed with woollies the supermarket being open until 10pm - most unusual and we didn't get slung out of that one! We stock up on lots of drinks cos weve been told that water costs a fortune the further north we go so the boot of the car is heaving...ho...

With yet another 5:30am start I was at least not alone in my suffering with Vanessa and Mel the two Canadians from the past few days also up to get the bus to Adelaide with an overnight stop in Coober Pedy. Not met too many other Scots in my travels so far but with only around 20 seats on board the small bus 3 of those were filled with the bums ...

So, Coober Pedy is one of the oddest places I have ever visited in my life. It is an opal mining town, located in the middle of nowhere. 90% of the people who live in this town (population about 3,000) live in dugouts... aka: caves. Because of the climate here in the desert, wicked hot in the summer and wicked cold in the winter, they found that...
