... br> Kneeling on the grass for about 45 minutes as I did I could feel slight prickling along my legs and forearms.

I had been savaged by hundreds of microscopic sand flies..
Within an hour I was covered in raised red itchy lumps, I react very badly to mozzie bites and these were far worse.

Shortly after 9:00 we were on our way out of town in a Hyundai i20. We could have rented a Mini Cooper, but it would have cost twice as much as the i20. Driving the Mini would have been fun, but stressful (they are very picky about scratches and dents). One of the nice things about Cairns is there are only two directions on can go, North or South. We were headed North. After negotiating a multitude of round-abouts we were on the open road.

... several people have died! Luckily we're around 2000 miles south of Sydney at the moment but pretty fortunate we're not there this week!
