... They have a large area with bush and dens. Wolves are moving south and there are more of them and many ranchers and homeowners are frightened of them. They have had a bad rap. Hollywood has much to answer. There was lots of information and talks and videos. I found it fascinating.

We camped at another lovely lake, Birch Lake next to Shannon and Steve from Minnesota with whom we shared a few drinks and talk of our countries.

... br> We watched them getting fed by hand and learned a little bit about their habits and almost extinction due to bounties on their heads which were in place up until the 1950's. They looked like big dogs and the most interesting thing for me was the family tree that showed how many popular breeds of domestic dogs came into being, all of which originated with the wolf.

Our destination being the town of Ely, which sits on the edge of an area called Boundary Waters, a series of lakes that are great for canoeing and spotting wildlife as well as serving as the border between the US and Canada.

It was in the high 50's when we arrived and raining, so no outdoor activities for us today. Headed off to the local steakhouse for some cow.

... Tara took to it all right away, and Glenn was a trooper, though not enjoying the muddy spots. Kevin, Carol, and Karl's experience guided us through the tough day which ended with setting up camp where we would stay four nights. The lake turned out to be nice for swimming and doing day trips, but not so good for fishing. Tara caught a Bass and Kevin a Walleye. Karl also caught a fish but ...

We caught TONS of giant smallmouth bass! The weather was decent, except for a couple of super windy days. We managed to avoid any bears or scary wildlife...just lots of chipmunks! As usual, the scenery was great. There's just something so cool about nature that's virtually untouched by man.
