... the first night and day by day it gets more impressive with more dancers and elephants and people. It really was a sight to see and we were really pleased that we went and saw it.. it was the hightlight of our trip!
it took an hour for the parade to reach the bottom temple and the main elephant covered in garlands carrying the main priest went to the temple for more blessings and prayers etc before the whole parade went back to the main temple at the top.
... fans blowing underneath them at a fixed air temperature, with people turning them over, for about 10/20 mins (it’s very precise but I don’t exactly remember the time). Then the leaves are crushed, to start the fermentation process, as the leaves are laid out on long, cool racks for exactly 21 minutes! The leaves are then fired to produce the black/brown tea after further processes that may have to crush the leaves further or remove stems etc. Then ...

Still unsure that it was clear (and warm) enough to go in, we bought our tickets and set off. The walk on a rocky path through the fields and in the rain rather strangely reminded us of Yorkshire. The surroundings were very pretty. We finally arrived at "Mini World's End" which was a great view down the valley, carrying on we arrived at "World's End Proper". The view from here was truly spectacular and over a dramatic drop. We were lucky to see really far, the ...
Thoroughly hooked as we were by this time on Sri Lanka's mountains we decided to continue the journey six kilometres straight up and eighty south to Nuwara Eliya, described in the brochures as "showcasing the British colonial past" which could mean neat lawns and punkah wallahs or concentration camps and Colonel Blimp. It nestles in a wooded basin at the foot of Mount Pidurutalagala, Sri Lanka's highest peak which is a little over twice the height of Ben ...
Newrela Eliya, Sri Lanka worldlywanderer... in our bathers and raincoats with cameras in plastic bags...we deviated off onto a set of steps and made our way through some bushes before our guide Rushan stopped us and made us check our feet for leeches -- wtf -- no-one told us that this was going to happen! We passed some cows, crossed a bridge and checked again for leeches - they were only little if you caught them quick but if one stayed on for too long they fattened up quick ...

Nuwara Eliya, Sri Lanka nialloMy friend AK came for a visit at the beginning of April. The day after his arrival, he, my friend Denise and I took a 5 hour bus ride up to Ella (in the mountains) where we stayed in a place with an incredible view of Ella gap. Apparently on a clear day you can see to the ocean - even though it's probably over 100 kms away. I think Ella is at about 2000m altitude. In the afternoon we watched the ...
Ella and beyond, Sri Lanka mioww... I'll miss about Sri Lanka so here they are: 1) COLD SHOWERS - You think I'd have gotten used to them by now but they still have the power to catch you by surprise and take your breath away. Oh for a hot bath... 2) TIGER BALM - for pretty much any ailment. Muscle aches, insect bites, headaches... Not sure how any of us would have made it through without the tiger balm. And not sure how to break the dependency when back in the ...
