Today started out with more rain, but our experience at Dunedin was saved by visiting the only castle in NZ, which was pretty spectacular. It also was another instance of money not buying happiness. The man who built it had a wife who died, he married her sister and she died, then married a younger woman whom presumably had an affair with his son. He ended up committing suicide. Then later on, the same son who was having an affair with his step-mom committed suicide as well. Pretty tragic sto...
Timaru, South Island, New Zealand aggurlieSadly, we left Edoras (Mt. Somers). I will never forget the beauty, expansiveness and magickal energy of the place. We were told by the guide book that Timaru would be a nice holiday town to visit. That was surely not the case in our eyes. It was just your normal everyday town set on the coast. The beach was not impressive. We got a few supplies in town at the few stores that were actually open. We found a great Turkish kabab eatery. We struck up a conversation about Turkey with the owner and...
Timaru, New Zealand alohagypsiesThe day started out with warm, sunny skies...FINALLY! We got ourselves together and headed down the road towards Baldwin Street, the steepest street in the World with a gradient of 1 in 2.36! We decided to walk the 270 steps to the top since we knew that Pablo would have never made it! While walking we watched a guy on a motorcycle and a guy in a sports car both race to the top with their engines screaming...and you can imagine how hot the brakes got on the way down! The part that was the mos...
Timaru, South Island, New Zealand i-wanderTimaru - From Winchester after turning right after leaving Geraldine on the left is a polo grounds where one may hit the right day to have a watch. In Temuku 7km down the road a person might just want to stop at the small shop on the left for a fresh fruit sundae. A New World Market is just ahead if you need supplies. Outside of Temuku on the Opihi River is a good place to park. As you travel around New Zealand most big rivers all have a place to pull over and stop beside. Kiwis are great out...
Timaru, New Zealand nztravelguide... full day of walking in the foothills, seeing a little more of the bits we missed at the museum and then getting to lake Takepo for early evening. I could quite happily have stayed in bed and read my book in the sunshine but the schedule wouldn't wait. I get dressed in almost all my clothes as its bloody freezing this morning and we set off, taking just water and no food for the three hour round trip to the head of one of the Glaciers. The scenery is spectacular once again but the walk on the ...
Mt. Cook Village, South Island, New Zealand adam_and_kimOn the way to Timaru we stopped off to see the Moreka Boulders which just seem to come out of the cliffs very strange. They are like huge round boulders, like big dinosaur eggs. I had a session of collecting more shells and lots of little pebbles so I could make some jewelery. While Julie and James spent their time putting dodgey bits of seaweed on their heads.
Timaru, South Island, New Zealand jamesandruth... cherries and now salmon. When we arrived at Mt. Cook it was perfectly clear and all the glaciers were visible. We did a steep, but short hike up to the Tasman glacier lake where some of the ice has broken off leaving ice-bergs floating in the lake. There is no plant life in the moraine so the landscape is strewn with rocks and boulders. The lake itself is sullied with churned mud giving it a grey ...
Mt. Cook Village, South Island, New Zealand oulous... to shake - it was like being in an earthquake - quite scary. No more views of Mt Cook - you wouldn't have even known that we were near any mountains. We went up to Mt Cook Village to see whether there was any chance that the weather would lift so we could do one of the walks into the valley. Hummmm not much chance - this rain is getting a bit tiresome. There is a fantastic Sir Edmund Hilary ...
Mt. Cook Village, South Island, New Zealand bec_fAfter our soak in the hot springs we head off to our next destination, Mount Cook which is in the Mackenzie ranges and is where Sir Edmund Hilary did his training prior to his successful ascent of Mount Everest. The drive, once again, takes us through stunning landscapes across the plains and along the shoreline of Lake Pukaki. All the time we are virtually surrounded by snow-capped mountains. We arrive in the dark at Glentanner ...
Mt. Cook Village, South Island, New Zealand candcthaiTime to stock up on a few provisions, i.e. beer & crisps, as we´re going to be in the middle of nowhere for the next two nights. Yep, our home for the next 48 hours are the shearer´s quarters at a station in the shadows of Mt Cook. We´ve been treated to some unusual places to stay on this trip, and this is no exception. Absolutely stunning location, with beautiful views all around, but Mt Cook stands out in particular The place ...
