Relaxing in Buhoma

After arriving in Buhoma in style (Toyota Corolla that cut out because the positive and negative leads on the battery touched) we decided to have a relaxing day. On a little trip to the village for food we met Richard who offered to take us to nearby Ishasha plains NP to see the tree climbing lions (when it's hot or the biting flies are too much for them they hide up in trees). Sounds great, going tommorrow.

In the evening we were treated to dance display by the local orphans school wh...

Lions

Up and out early for Ishasha, which is right on the border of the DR Congo. Arrived at the park at about half 8, before we had even entered the park we had come across a troop of baboons by the side of the road, the baby ones were cute but wouldn't fancy my chances with the male.

Now you probably have visions of us charging round the park in an open top 4x4, not quite, we did it in the same Toyota Corolla. Never expected to make it all the way around but we did. Unfortunately due to th...

Gorilla day

Up early again to register and head off to see the gorillas at 7.30. Had a mammoth 10 minute walk to where they had slept the night before. Absolutely UNBELEIVABLE, we were within 10 metres of a huge silverback and his whole family. At first he wasn't best pleased with us being there and started stomping around, beating his chest and ripping down trees. Then he seemed to relax a little and they let us spend the rest of the allocated hour watching them in amazement. The silverback was just hug...

We very soon realised that we were never going to get even close to the island, mostly because we were falling victim to the 'Mzungu Corkscrew' - the complete inability of ...

Lac Bunyoni

Gorilla Trekking

... water supply. My porter Matthew didn't even flinch when i unloaded my very heavy bag onto him and although the altitude and heat were already starting to affect us, it was an excited group who set off up the road and made for a clearing in the forest. We hiked up and down steep and slippy inclines for approx 45 mins which were very hard terrain and after lots of talking on the walki talkis, Christopher told us that the gorillas were near (near i guess in Ugandan timeline ...

Waterfall walk

... at the starting point, we strolled back to camp pausing shortly to browse the local shops before collapsing in the bar and then a late lunch at 2pm. The afternoon allowed us to take a well deserved chill out and an amazing array of thunder, lightening, heavy rain and hail graced us with its presence, this was all very surreal and even the camp attendants were suprised by the hail. This lasted for about an hour and then it was sunny and hot again.. very ...

Lake Bunyonyi

I traveled to Lake Bunyonyi in southern Uganda from Kibuye on Thursday. I made the journey in four long stretches leaving at 5.30 am from Kibuye on the matatu to Kigali. I then took a coach to Kabale the nearest Ugandan town before jumping in a private taxi to the lake. From there it was just a matter of a 45 minute canoe trip to Byoona Amagara island - an ecologically friendly campsite.

Lake Bunyonyi is beautiful in a very ...

One of the guys from the UK,Tom, was stung 7 times. We are spending today in a gorgeous campsite and we have the day to ourselves which is nice. Robin and I went for a walk and are going to relax for the rest of the day by the water. Tomorrow we start ...

Transfers, Confusions and Bad Roads

... the World Cup would be good. Bad is such and understatement.. The roads are fecking atrocious. You could be traveling 80km and all of sudden there would be part of the road missing....and BANG...your getting air off the seats. In fairness our driver Patrick is great at avoiding most of those kinds.. We arrived at the camp site in Bwinde to find out one couple had to stay in a very large tent with holes in ...
