ice and mountains and sheep. lots of sheep.

Okay. We have found some wireless internet, here at the Te Anau Top 10 Holiday Park. Because of this, I have time to properly update you, because I am on our laptop. I should have figured this out earlier, but I'm a little slow on the uptake, I guess. First, yesterday. Yesterday we drove from Greymouth to Franz Josef, a short two hours that was supposed to put us into "Franz" with enough time to explore the glaciers leisurely. Which would have been an *awesome* plan, except for how we didn't ...

Rip off merchants and some rather nice scenery.

The drive to Dunedin took about 6 hours but we arrived to a rather pleaseant small town, perched on the side of lake te anau, so it was very picturesque. On our first day here we had booked onto the glow worm cave tours which we thought sounded good. It was rather expensive at 57 dollars each for a two hour tour but we thought what the hell. Anyways the tour was a disappointment. The journey across the lake to the caves took 30 mins. we then waited as we were split into small groups of 10 peo...

Day 53: Te Anau

On the Wednesday morning we headed to Te Anau which is on the edge of the Fiordland area in the south west of the south island. We decided to do a walk around the lake via the wildlife park that houses native bird species that are endangered. This was a lovely walk although a bit wet as it started raining quite heavily when we were part way round. After returning to the van and drying off we headed out on an evening trip to the glow worm caves. We took the half our boat ride across the lake t...

Te Anu and Milford Sound

On the 6th we headed from the South up to the west coat to Lake Te Anu. Te Anu was meant as an overnight stop before the drive to Milford Sound, but the drive was so long that we decided to set up camp there and do a trip to Milford with Top Ten Campsite Tours. Our first day in Te Anu was rainy and miserable. The second day looked as if it would be the same, as we hopped onto the minibus at 8am to take our trip to Milford. Our smiley driver Reese stopped at a chasm, where we took a short boar...

Hamner Springs

Betsy goes backwards now!! Yay, this is good news indeed, plus it only cost us a measly $20, roughly 7 UK pounds, because all the mechanics had to do was adjust the gears a bit. And... ahem... they showed us that there was in fact a manual choke (a manual choke?? Seriously, we've never driven anything this old, we weren't to know) and I think they took pity on us for being a bit dim... So in celebration we headed north to Hamner Springs, and camped for our first night! The campsites here are ...

Key Summit Walk

Sunday 19 October Key Summit S 44° 48.9' E 168° 48.9' And Te Anua S 45° 24.9' E 167° 42.6' From the DOC brochure, the best walk was to Key Summit. Thus involved driving half way back to Milford and then taking the Routeburn Track for a couple of miles. Then up to a plateau at the end of one of the lower ridges. Key Summit is so named because it is the point of the divide from where water goes either to the west coast, south coast or east coast. There's a nature trail at the top. I did that th...

I got off the little boat and went to find Em who had disappeared, I found her in our cabin in her pyjama trousers because her legs had got so wet whilst she was kayaking. She was not in a good mood! We tried to put her trousers on the ...
