Bryce Canyon (01.10.2005-02.10.2005)

We arrive early at Bryce Canyon and instantly this place feels uncomfortable crowded. Bryce Canyon is major tourist destination in South-Utah and hundreds trailers and busses pass by each day. We camp at Sunset campground where deers are passing by. We get into our hiking boats and walk down to the rim at Sunset Point. Immediately I'm truly amazed by the natural beauty of Bryce Canyon and I come to understand why so many people find their way to this place. It is difficult to describe Bryce C...

Bryce Canyon, UT to Home

An early morning and I'm up, mainly to see the difference between yesterday’s sunset with the sunrise on the canyon. Its not a completely clear sky, there are clouds in the east, so the light is diffused for a big chunk of the morning. I’d like to have some harsher shadows too contrast some of the lighter sandstone but I’m just happy it’s not raining.

Start to load the camera gear and notice that the transmission line to the radia...

Day 48 - No Lions In Zion

We awoke to a very grey morning with big storm clouds in the direction that we were heading, and it was actually quite chilly, enough to make us wear T-shirts with sleeves and 3/4 length trousers for the first time in weeks. After packing up we headed north through the forest and Chip claimed his first road-kill victim, a ground squirrel we think.

Just a short drive up the road we entered Zion National Park. Another $25 entrance fee, so we're in credit now!

Zion is a mix of de...

We Get To Bryce After A Great Drive On US-89 N

We get a good start on the road and decide to get off of I-40 and take some backroads through New Mexico to get to Bryce. What a treat! You couldn't see this from the highway. Enjoy the photos while traveling through some interesting country! More importantly, we arrive at our campgroup rather late that night....8pm. We are fortunate, again, to get a good spot. Bryce was amazing!!! A bazillion photos attached.....and, we still missed some.

... day it topped out at 36F which is 2C. Still, it was another sunny fresh day and thankfully there was hardly any wind (fnarrr) so was really pleasant for walking.

And that is what I did – walk – again. I think I have clocked about 18 miles over the last three days and I am still here to type the tale.

Of course I had a 250 mile round trip to get to Bryce and then 30 miles of scenic drive to ...

HooDoo what!?

... 8217;t that impressed with Bryce. It has some amazing rock formations and views, but one day of hiking around is enough. Even a park ranger told us the only reason he hikes the back country there is because he gets paid to. And while he might have been a bit extreme, he suggested an absolutely beautiful campground for us at Pine Lake. The lake was clear blue ...

... dirt and ketchup stains all over the 3 pilgrims? The kids had their first showers after 5 days and we did our first laundry in the RV park.    Homeschooling continues to have its familiar struggles, but the kids are getting into earning Junior Ranger Badges (you should see them taking their oaths to be "explorers" and "caretakers") at the parks so this has provided a little extra motivation ...

The final days on the bus...

... the sun come up we only had to sit up in our sleeping bags. I was wide awake so i went a wandering across the desert seeing wild rabits and all the other animals that thought no human would be near. After a wonderous breakfast made by my own fair un-hungover hands we drove out to Utah.  I'd already ben to zion and when i went last time i did the angels landing hike, this time i wanted to do one called the narrows. This is basically a hike through the virgin river into a ...

Hoodoo You Think Loved Bryce?

... the Grand Canyon State, he sent us back into Utah. Our original choice to go left was right. To celebrate, we drove past the McDonald's, the Subway, and the Pizza Hut in Kanab, Utah and headed straight for Big Al's Burger Junction. The adjacent table gave a seminar on how to teach your wife to mow the yard using a riding tractor. We ate a buffalo burger, fries with special sauce, a corn dog, and an extra large frozen lemonade that melted about halfway through our Zion ...

... ahead. He gave us some pointers about the trip ahead and let us be on our way. We headed into Bryce and decided to hike down into the canyon, but we were saving that for last. First we drove to the end of the park and started to hit every pulloff on the way back. This is where you will see most of the pictures from today. Chris got a little restless and reverted back to his younger days, "imagine that" Kara ...
