IDK, my BFF?!? - Day 3

Today, and for days and days to come, the entries will be in Mountain Time. We're off and we've driven 1, 688 miles so far. We've learned that prairie mud is very, very, very, very sticky...Seriously, it's sticky, and we can't get it off of our shoes. We spent last night at Sage Creek Campground inside Badlands NP. I very highly recommend this campsite, and not just because it's free. Seen from the hilltop right next to it, it very closely resembles a wagon train of small SUV's and vans. We w...

Bad is Beautiful

After a wonderful drive through the "heartland", I took a weird route in order to drive by Mt. Rushmore. The Black Hills are really pretty and I must have passed over a thousand bikers on my way to Rushmore and on to the Badlands NP. The big Sturgis biker party was scheduled for the next week, so the roads were reaching a just bearable level of motorcycle rumble. I hit Rapid city before heading to Badlands to take care of a much needed oil change and car wash. I think, by the time I hit Rapid...

... buildings including a homestead, one room schoolhouse, general store, blacksmith, dentist, jewlers, etc. I just can't believe how much stuff this guy had. After we looked around, it was off to Minnesota. We arrived around 7 p.m. We had no plans regarding where we would stay that night. Janis saw on his map a place called Kilen Woods State Park. So, we went there and to our disappointment its camping grounds were ...

Finally get to the falls but the sun is not quite back to this point so you’ll have to forgive me for the lack of detail. As I head back to the tent the morning sun is really starting to highlight the fields and creating quite a show.

Packed up and ready to head to Badlands National Park, its only a few hours away so I can have plenty of time to roam the park. On one ...

Your not on the Eastern Shore anymore

... Missouri River proved restful, informative and picturesque. After crossing the Missouri, the terrain changed and became much hillier. Large fields, now mostly grain, more cattle and fewer houses; open prairie with few trees. On our trip to Iowa, we enjoyed the wild flowers growing along the roads. In South Dakota, they bale the road sides for feed!. Large bales weighing between 1500 and 2000 pounds.

... that there was no hail damage to Minnie. Iris said not to worry, that it was only pea-sized, which was too small for damage.
- We got onto the Interstate. The storm FLARED. Bri gripped the steering wheel, Christen began to panic, and Iris tried to calm everyone down. Christen turned the flashers on. Bri slowed to about 30mph and became silent and wide-eyed. Visibility lessened to about ten feet. Hail increased to about nickel-sized. We noticed that even big ...

... cleaning up the remnants of our camp and drove out of the Badlands with a memento of over 40 mosquito bites from the night in the grass. Nice!! But alas it was fine and we drove back out of the dust and onto the tarmac of south dakota joining the hundreds of bikers that were still blazing around and never failing to facinate me. We drove to Badlands National park and went in, driving through absolutely remarkably unique landscape of rough and ragged rock formations that ...

... rocks and stopped at several viewing points along the way. We arrived at Custer State Park around 6 pm and set everything up by 7:30 pm . We have a nice site-shaded and backs onto a creek. It was great to relax with a cool beverage around the campfire! We are looking forward to a five night stay in South Dakota. FYI-the cheapest gas-Minnesota 3.98 and now in South Dakota it's 4.07-converts to close to $1.00 a litre. Enjoy the photos!

Wall Drug is heaven on earth, or a tourist trap

... a tunnel and saw a dog-like thing ahead of us. This wolf ran right up to the car and I swear he wanted to jump on top of my hood! I started driving away and he chased us through the tunnel until he couldn't keep up anymore. It was cool to see a wolf so close up, little did we know we'd see a million more animals up close the next day. I'll continue more on the next entry.

It took us about 45 minutes to get to our RV park in the Badlands. Having no idea what to expect, it was amazing to see miles of farm land and then, all of the ...
