Day 19 - Black Canyon

Day 19 - Apache Junction to Canyon Lake. 26th May 2008. Up a little earlier today to do a tour of the Apache Trail (most likely info on the net to look up for those interested.) We drove through some narrow tight roads up and over some rugged country to a small township called Tortilla Flat, (wonderful motor bike country for those fans, Richard) as can be seen by the bikes at the road house. This was a stage coach stop and the photos I hope give an idea of the place. A really interesting hist...

Grand Teton National Park / Wyoming

Where am I?

... in Wyoming looked good. The van was making a loud knocking noise on the rough roads so I checked underneath and found a loose rear shock. So we are stuck here until it is fixed drinking wine and watching HBO. Stay tuned. Nels

.

... a hurry to get into the Fort, I tried to scale the wall. Please look at the photo to see what a pain in the rear it is to scale the wall. Yesterday I spotted a Tesla on the road. It is the first one I ever saw. It is the first all-electric car available in America and costs about $100,000. Rock Springs is a real ...

... back home then. Along with lots of cows out in pastures, I saw a couple of groups of prong horn antelopes grazing along the fences by the highway. They are so graceful and lovely. As I got past the Snowy Range, the wind really picked up a lot and there are snow fences to help keep the highway open. I saw cows lying or grazing in the lee of the snow fences where they were more comfortable because the wind was mitigated. I also saw open pit mining operations as I drove ...

... it became 1 to 2 miles or more between them. There were cross fences to contain beef cows in pastures, and I no longer saw the interesting corn storage facilities that I had seen the past couple of days. The vegetation changed too as I climbed. Wide open flat fields gave way to rolling hills with clumps of mostly cottonwoods, willows and cedars growing in grass land. There was one stretch where the woods hadn't been cleared out and it was possible to imagine what it was ...

... you follow this road. I took a photo at a rest stop just to show the snow and wind - note the flags. When I arrived in Rock Springs I drove out to the Wild Horse Rescue ranch and looked at the horses. I was going to adopt one for Carol, but it was too late and the office was closed. I have some better photos of the horses, but will not be able to load them till I get home.

Touring Teton

This day we toured Grand Teton National Park. The scenery was even better than Yellowstone although the haze in front of the mountains never really cleared. Had another leisurely picnic by a river and talked to one of the tour guides for the river float that was taking out of the place we were resting. He reported that a grissly bear was in the area and we ...

Day Two: A Few Road Trip Lessons

... hours, the better it is for driver and passenger. Rachel and I practically raced out of there with groceries in hand. (4) Don't stare at the roadkill--It really can be disgusting... especially if it's a big animal. And there has been a lot of roadkill. Especially since we're driving in a rural area. Driving slowly by roadkill is also not recommended. (5) Laugh at everything--i.e.: the trucks speeding past and honking ...
