Suited us for an overnight stay

Port Augusta was just an overnight stay for us and the BIG4 Holiday Park was OK for that purpose, particularly as the staff offered us a drive-thru site so we didn't have to unhitch. No doubt it would be suitable as a base for a few days if exploring the area. Certainly the pool looked inviting on the very hot day we arrived.

You park from alternating sides of the road so you end up looking at your neighbours car! Noisy road and even when the park isn't busy they pack you all in one area. Weird!

    Comfortable spot just through town

Friendly staff (2 very efficient and knowledgable women). Has all the facilities you could want. Service station next door. Located 1-2km from town centre (over the bridge). The hotel next door (about 300 metres walk) has very good food, although fairly pricey. Don't take the kids! It is possible to stumble over there in the dark, just watch out for the prickles in the grass if you decide to go cross-country!!

Port Augusta sees the Eyre and Stuart Highways come together and the traffic is heavy!

Each morning we walked from our Caravan Park into town and on the return journey we'd stop on the old pedestrian bridge and count caravans heading north. There's LOTS!!! Just like the West Aussies head north to Broome for winter, so the South Aussies …

Left Broken Hill headed out Barrier Hwy for Adelaide. Soon through the border into SA and a quarantine fruit check. Long straight roads. Morning tea at Yunta rest stop, and lunch at Peterborough. The town is dominated by the railway workshops once the main employment in the town up to the 70's. Then controlled by a preservation society , now a …

This morning we got up nice and early and made our way to the neighbouring suburb of Thevanard and the fish processing factories. We were lucky enough to find some people at work, filleting King George Whiting. They showed us how it's done and got a bronze whaler shark out of the cool room too. We couldn't leave empty handed of course and purchased …

Hawker - Not me the town, which is situated about 100km north of Port Augusta. A small town that is 59 km west of the Flinders Rangers.

It's a great spot to stay when the national park is full during Easter. The drive to Flinder Rangers is a little tricky trying to miss roos and emus.

However the drive is very picturesque. …

Today the temperatures were the highest we have encountered on our travels yet, with the outside temperature shown in the car reaching 44degC at times.

It was actually a very pleasant 22degC as we reluctantly departed Port Lincoln under a cloudy sky. Our original plan was just to retrace our route back to Port Augusta via the coast, but in …
