Torres del Paine, Patagonia, Chile, 562-335-6898
Torres del Paine National Park is the centerpiece of the Chilean National Park system. The literal translation is Blue Towers (Torres=Towers in Spanish and Paine=Blue in the aboriginal language) and the Torres and Cuernos (horns) of the Paine massif are the dominant feature. Part of the park was a sheep ranch, which is being slowly returned to its natural state. The eastern part of the park is actually private and this is the area in which we stayed. Patagonia Camp, our lodging for a week is ...
Torres del Paine, Patagonia, Chile btran... a trek we hoped to complete in seven days. When we arrived, we were told that the northern part of the circuit was officially closed, meaning that none of the refugios (warm, indoor centers for various amenities at campsites) were open and that, if some emergency were to happen, people trekking up there were pretty much on their own. Also, there was apparently still pretty bad weather up there (the north side always gets more cold and snow than the south side). Only ...

Torres del Paine, Patagonia, Chile geert-sa... days...

Now get this. We wake up at an early 6 am in hopes of making an early morning hike to view the Torres at sunrise (the sunrise causes the Torres to be viewed as if they were painted Red), but it is to our surprise that there are 4 inches of snow on the ground and counting. Hello La Patagonia, how are you this morning? Fine? Well we are a bit cold and yet smilling as if it was Christmas morning!

The agenda for day 2 is a bit long. We have hopes of a 10 hour hike to ...

Torres del Paine, Patagonia, Chile pepsouille... the world economy, capitalism, communism, football teams and why you can see a rainbow at Iguassu Falls when there is a full moon among other topics . Torres del Paine, Patagonia, Chile anthonykathryn... mud paths and we began following streams leading through colourful autumn trees. Of course, the further the path went up, the more the views expanded over the park, some gigantic bright blue and green lagoons came into view. The scenery was enough to take away the little breath that the wind left you.

We ended up walking through a number of woods, finally deciding to head back again after about 2 hours, before the sun started going down. The best bit of this ...
Torres del Paine, Patagonia, Chile spog00... man i am lucky you have to see this place. Torres del Paine, Patagonia, Chile heinz82... at an estancia where you get a typical chilean asado (BBQ) before reaching Puerto Natales again. Puerto Natales is a small fisherman´s town at the shores of the fjord Ultima Esperenza where once or twice a week the Navimag ferry leaves up the chilean fjords to Puerto Montt (4 days journey - about 500 USD). There are some good fish restaurants here (mainly mussels and salmon), a relief after all that Argentinian beef ...
Puerto Natales, Patagonia, Chile flyingtiti... ranges to a nearby lakeside, stunning scenery where the photos do the talking - coming back via waterfalls and lookouts. Then we drove south towards the Chilean park administration centre (CONAF) to learn more about the park´s geology. I´d been a silly boy this day - first, I´d left my water flask on-board the connecting bus, never to be retrieved; and now at CONAF, I´d left my 80 pound sunglasses on the table whilst I reached over to get my ...
Torres del Paine, Patagonia, Chile atullgupta... drive through the park itself to the campsite at Pehoe was marvellous. We saw lots of Vicuna and a fox. We got to the campsite and booked in. (http://campingpehoe.com/index.html) We had made all our booking 8 or 9 months beforehand and could not get a hotel for the first night no matter how hard we tried. This was easy camping though as we hired a tent, bags and sleeping mats. The ...
