TWO DAYS ONE ISLAND

... I add to their life’s story. I tell of places they have only seen in movies; tall buildings and Farris wheels, of old German castles and night under the Affel Tour, in Paris. I become a dream weaver; a teller of stories. They hang on spoken in broken Spanish as if I were Pablo Neruda himself. They speak and I listen and now their story becomes a part of mine.

Hours of walking, taking pictures and talking has found us hungry again. We ...

Chiloe Island

... mostly farmland. Sunshine all day. At the little port we picked up a local guide who was fantastic, most interesting and knowledgeable about the history and birds on the island. The birdlife is amazing. Stopped at a beach and wandered along, the shore just covered with birds, particularly black necked swans. A short stop for oysters... which those who liked them said were wonderful. Bernard enjoyed them! Lunch was at a fish restaurant overlooking the sea ...

... of plants I don't recognise at all. And lots of falcons, and a bird (joté?) apparently related to the condor. Then there's an amazing ecosystem called the Tepual (I think) based around the tree of the same name - dense twisting tree trunks creating a huge mass of life, vauely like mangroves, but without the stench, and fairly dry. Further up again you would see Alerce trees - but we didn´t have the time. We planned to camp in the national park for ...

... in the fish market, that contained some kind of zzdafot, and it was really good, eventhough its not hygienic. i also had a paila marina, which is a soup with a lot of sea food in it, weired, but had to taste it. yesterday i came back to puerto varas just to get some souveniers, really nice faces made of clay of the local indians, i saw it in here and then i couldnt find it everywhere, so i had to come back to buy it. luckily i did have a second chance this time.

No pirates (or Geena Davis) on mystery island

... in the Castro city museum. I promise to upload plenty of church pictures if I can ever find a USB connection. We spent about a week in Chiloé, which is literally infested with tiny villages and a crack bus system linking them all together. We hiked around in the most disorganized National Park we´ve been to in South America, (the park office just pretended there were trails and campsites)which was nonetheless a nice taste of the wild, temperate rainforest that ...

Day trip to Chiloe

... to, it rains down this way, and Ive seen quite a lot of it over the last week or so. The sun did come out to shine in the afternoon which was a welcome sight. Chiloe is as I have been told has some stunning scenery and a different vibe to the mainland of Chile, maybe it was too much to try and discover in one day, I'm sure its all there.. somewhere..

Going South

... other than I had a Barros Luca here, another Chilean specialty, a steak and cheese sandwich named after a former president. The following morning we took the 30 minute local bus to Puerto Vares which was a much nicer town and similar to Pucon in that it was surrounded by the extremely large Lake Llanquihue with the snow-capped Orsono Volcano in the far distance. After a couple of hours wandering around Puerto Vares, I had seen ...
