We awoke to the sight of the 10th fairway only 20 yards from our tent. A vicious slice from one of the members and we'd potentially have 364 dimples landing on the canvas. Steve was a tad ashamed he hadn't spotted it the night before; he can usually sniff a golf course from miles away. Next surprise was the turkey vultures who strolled across the fairway and paid us a visit at our pitch. ...

... is the prettiest, but still not a patch on stretches of Route 1 that we'd driven down a few days before. As icing on the cake Sam became very travel sick about 1/2 mile in. All in all a waste of an hour an $10. If you like golf courses, rich people's holiday houses and driving by all means do it. If not head down Route 1.

We are staying overnight in the small desert town of Tonopah (pronounced toe-NO-pa), Nevada. Last hotel/motel room in town because of workers on a big construction project soaking up all accommodation. Tonopah lies at the end of the aptly named, 225 kilometre long, undivided Extraterrestrial Highway, through cloudless, sunlit desolation, with bare rock mountains seemingly suspended above vast expanses of dry lake bed.

... doing this ride. Wayne and Barb were neighbors of Julie and I in Mission Viejo for 15 years. Julie and Barb were forever volunteering to lead the girl scouts, be the soccer mom's, drive the kids to the T Street beach in San Clemente, etc...Over the years we have enjoyed a lot of rides together.

Wayne works for Shimano the international leader in cycling components...gears, breaks, wheels, etc....Shimano is a major sponsor of R2R. Wayne ...
