Snorkel Heaven

We met some folks the other day who said they thought we were incredibly brave spending all this time travelling together having just got married! Several others have probably thought the same but boy, has it been great. We are some of the lucky few newlyweds who get the time to lay the foundations for their life together, discussing shared values, visions, aspirations, goals, role expectations, etc. Gerald and Lina would be so proud of us! Have there been any falling outs yet? |Have we grown ...

... incredibly expensive so we spent our two days here on the beach and snorkelling.

Surprisingly, the snorkelling was totally different to the other end of the reef; the coral was much more impressive and stretched on for miles instead of just appearing in patches like in Cape Range. The wildlife, however, wasn’t as varied and apart from Sarah’s sighting of a turtle, it was pretty much just fish we saw. We can’t believe how blasé we’ve become about ...

hello Ningaloo

Ningaloo Reef has been an absolute highlite for us. We are both from the Ocean now doubt, and Oscar loves the water just as much as we do; Snorkeling, Fishing, Whale watching and even a little surf. Suprised we left? well it is 40 degrees every day til march! And we have no AC in the tent.

Exploring Exmouth

... Uncle Sam) we plunged straight into the cool water and were instantly transported to another world. We saw tiny blue fish dancing near the surface; starfish lazing on rocks on the seabed; we saw sea cucumbers that looked like poo. At one point, I saw a large, dark shadow looming under the coral. Now, this stretch of coast sees it’s fair share of sharks, and not just the little ’safe’ ones that Australians pooh-pooh, but the big ones ...

... at deserted roadhouses along the way. Each time we stopped, everyone piled off the bus and wandered aimlessly around the shop, picking up and putting down novelty lighters, trying on sunglasses and fingering Australian flag t-shirts. To return to the bus empty-handed seems like a waste of a precious opportunity - as the journey continues and roadhouse follows roadhouse, the question becomes not ‘do I want to buy anything?’ but ‘what shall I buy this time ...

Finding Nemo

Next stop after Karratha was the more picturesque and tourist oriented Exmouth. Exmouth is to Perth what Noosa is to Melbourne – a chance to escape the long winter terms for a bit of sunshine and sand - and as it was the last weekend of the WA school holidays, we found ourselves unable to find a campsite for the first time on our trip. Not to worry: we instead enjoyed a night in a holiday apartment. The ...

... at the jetty and then called it a day. Next morning we visited the infamous Boab prison tree. This tree has a girth of 14 metres and a hollow trunk. At one time it was used as a prison or holding place by blackbirder's; settlers who captured and used Aboriginal people in the Pearling Industry. Prisoners were held inside this tree en route to the Old Derby gaol. You can still see the rusty iron rings that are bolted into the ground and were used to chain the prisoners. It is a sad ...
