Where Ice Became a Verb

After staying in the parking lot at Nascar....I mean Wal-Mart we headed out at about 6 am towards Memphis. Kids kept sleeping until we arrived at Graceland. As we approached Memphis, we noticed the signs on the bridges read "Bridge Might Ice In Cold Weather". After fueling (an hour later), we found our way to Graceland. We got cleaned up a smidge and went right over to the "King's" house. Pretty impressive person when you see all of the gold, platinum, etc records all in one place. The house ...

Pork Sandwichs and the Memphis Blues

Saturday morning, we woke up early and took to the road for Memphis. Since it's about a 7-hour ride, we decided to stop off somewhere in the middle for a break. Jill suggested Lynchburg to go to Jack Daniels' Whiskey factory, but due to missing our exit, we decided to stay on that road and go to Nashville. Once there, we immediately got lunch. We went to a place called Jack's BBQ for some Tennessee pork sandwiches. They were really good at the time, but left Jill with an unpleasant smoky afte...

We're going to Graceland

Monday 12th May Big traveling day, about 300miles west towards Memphis. Kept passing places advertising "fried pies" We thought you baked a pie, how can you fry it? Sounds unhealthy but we mean to try one. Stopped off at Lawrenceburg where there was supposed to be a Davy Crockett (King of the wild front ear!) museum. This turned out to be a shack where he had once lived. Another museum/shop/ junk yard, mostly full of rubbish. Passed through Savannah on way to Shiloh. It's claim to fame being ...

Help me information give me Memphis Tennessee

Thurs 15th May Back Downtown to the Rock and Soul Museum, charting the history or the genre from its roots in black gospel music, blues and hillbilly country music. Good intro film about the social and political influences of the time, leading up to Elvis, R and B and Soul music. Lunch in the Peabody mall. On the way out Brian saw a green exit sign which he thought would be one of his famous short cuts! We pushed a bar to exit through double doors, which slammed shut behind us. When we reache...

Day 161 Baton Rouge - Memphis Tennessee

Day 161 Baton Rouge Louisiana - Memphis Tennessee. The planned departure to trek through Mississippi State, to our Pilgrimage to the home of Elvis, began at 9:30am. The roads through Louisiana were a little rough but not difficult to follow. We stopped about 2 hours along at a Super Wal Mart to have morning tea as well as top up with gas and groceries. We set off again after a delay because to obtain the latest round of pictures was a big challenge for the photo centre operator. The disc writ...

Day 162 Memphis Tennessee

Day 162 Memphis Tennessee Being over the road from Graceland, of course the agenda is set for the day with a visit to Elvis's home. Arriving at the ticket centre at 9am we were on the second 9am tour. Loaded into a shuttle bus and across the road we go. The entrance to the house is a smaller version of a pillared Southern mansion. An introduction at the steps by a guide, explaining that the house and land was originally a wedding gift to the original owners and he name was Grace, they named i...

Elvis

We caught an 8 hour train from New Orleans to Memphis, we're getting used to the whole train thing. This one was a big old double decker job. We stayed at the end of Lonely Street, behind the Heartbreak Hotel. Seriously. It was the Gracelands Camping Ground and we stayed in a log cabin type affair. Very cheap, it was freezing cold though during the night and we didn't discover the heater until the morning. We wandered over to Graceland and checked out Elvis the Pelvis's house. Is very very se...

Memphis Blues (Rain!)

On the drive to Memphis we stopped off at place called Natural Bridge for fuel and thought we might as well have a nosey at the Natural Bridge. It ended up being really cool and you can check it out in the photos. From here we drove to Hamilton before getting back on the Interstate. It was a great way to see a bit more of Alabama.

We drove through the state of Mississippi and passed Elvis's birthplace, Tupelo and finally arrived at Memphis! We turned up to Graceland and loved our cabin...

Survived Day 1...Barely

... of the street back towards the car and was stopped by a man who said I looked lost. It was a trap. He wanted $6 to stay overnight in a church down the street because it was going to be so cold overnight. Since when did churches enter the hotel business? I dug my hand into my pocket and verified the mace Zac had given me was handy. I pulled it out once I was alone and tested it into the air behind me…just in case. I had rolled my eyes at everyone ...

Last Stop on the Road in 2007: Memphis

... a standing ovation at the end of “Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing.” The second half of the concert was as good as it had been anywhere on the tour, and the strong religious and patriotic sensitivities of the local audience led to additional standing ovations after “God Bless America,” “Battle Hymn of the Republic,” and the encore “Amazing Grace.” This last number, which the Choir also sang in Nashville, provided an electric ...
