Day 9: Lightning and Geysers

A travel blog entry by splencner

Day 9: Lightning and Geysers Today we drove 147 miles around the west side of Yellowstone National Park (YNP). Weather was great until about 6 p.m. when a huge thunderstorm rolled in that conquered most of the sunset, just like yesterday. The temp ranged from about 70 in the sun to 48 under the clouds. Weather was better than yesterday. I'm dry now …

Day 8: Rainy Yellowstone

Day 8: Rainy Yellowstone Today we drove 125 hard miles into and around Yellowstone National Park (YNP). It was cool with a high in the low 60's. All day we were dodging thunderstorms until the late afternoon when the whole area got a good soaking. The day is ending and it is cool and partly cloudy. There hasn't been sun since the rainfall so …

Dave's wife had to work in the morning so we went out driving, off the beaten track it was a neat drive. His wife made a good meal both Friday night and the Saturday meal. We spent most of the afternoon chatting and then we decided to head off to Yellowstone Park. We camped inside Yellowstone Park at the Mammoth Campground.

We woke up early in order to say goodbye to Uncle Pete before he went to work and in order for Pete and Lily to complete a very special errand. Way back in April when the trip started, Lily had overheard Jess and Tim talking about the finances for the trip and seemed to become worried and she wanted to contribute and offered for several days in a …

We drove 110 miles around Yellowstone National Park. Weather started windy again and quickly warmed to the upper 60's. Mostly clear skies. Tonight is supposed to be very cold in the 30's, as was last night.

This campground gets quite windy so watch out. I have been here twice. If you get there around 10 a.m. or 11 a.m. you will find an open spot. Bathrooms are as clean as any in a national park and camping is under $20.

There was only one other campground open at this time of year, and it was full. I camped here at Mommoth for 4 nights and really enjoyed it. Despite the rain, I had an excellent view of wildlife. The Elk were rutting and were full of activity around and in the camp.
