Zanzibar 3

15 June Now for a very very brief history of Zanzibar and Tanzania: Zanzibar has a long history of trade with the Arab world, reaching a peak between the 12th and 15th centuries. Through that trade Islam reached the islands. The Portuguese arrived in the 16th century and they were eventually supplanted by the Omani Arabs. To this day Oman still plays a big role in trade with Zanzibar. In 1964, Zanzibar signed a treaty of unity with Tanganyika (mainland Tanzania) and the union became today's T...

sea sickness, rain and spice tour

The trip to Zanzibar started with a boat trip, where Karl tried to get away paying residents prices (22,000 Tsh/11 pounds) instead of the foreign fare (US$35/18 pounds) - but we were caught when they inspected the tickets and our residency permit was requested and obviously we did not have it and were therefore sent back to the ticket office. As Karl had 15 mins he ended up paying the difference in TSh at an exchange rate of 1400 instead of the banks 1200Tsh. The moral of the story is be hone...

... to manage to scramble over sleeping people, stacks of good, past people who saw no point whatsoever in moving out of the way and at the same time try not to be pushed overboard by the crazy locals who clearly had never heard of civilized queuing and instead shoved as if they were handing out free beer on the life boat below. Then down a steep ladder, trying to lower your massive backpack into the moving life boat and not the lake and finally trying to find a seat on the boat which ...

... and his mate were both smoking dope on the way out to fishing. It seems to be the normal here.
The Chef cooked all of the fish we caught for tea with octopus, salad and rice.
2 days later we went again, this time with a spear gun and fishing gear. The reef here is unbelievable , a million different color fish , coral, sea snakes, etc... I managed to spear a good fish for tea so it was all good.

This was the life for 5 days. A dam good break from ...

TIP: If you're heading to Zanzibar, pre-book your tickets as the ferries there can sell out quite quickly on the day (so I hear). And pack your passport, you need it for getting in and out of Zanzibar. Though Zanzibar is a part of Tanzania (in fact it is the "zan" in TanZANia), it is a security precaution to ...

... Stone Town, the square mass called the Bawani sat staring at the moon. It was the only big, modern construction for miles around, a colossal structure, aesthetically Eastern European, more like a huge government building than a hotel. In a sense, it was just that, built as the first major hotel by the communist Tanzanian Government decades ago. Now, the only active thing about it was its disco. In the basement, it was a sweltering hot Friday night ...

Onward to Stone Town

... soak my shirt. Sexy, huh? I managed to stay lost for about 2 hours when somehow I ended up back at my hotel. Not sure how... must be my African bushman warrior training kicking in. For dinner tonight I crossed the street and went to a nicer hotel. They have a rooftop patio restaurant that overlooks Stonetown and the harbour. I wanted to hug the guy when he brought my ice-cold beer in a frozen beer glass. Ice cold anything is a luxury in east Africa ...

... a turtle and an octopus. Also saw some nudibranches and my favourite- sea cucumbers. Then walked along the beach and had lunch at a nearby hotel. Now this was what Zanzibar should have been about - beautiful white sand, turquoise waters ...divine. Only downside I got so sick on our little dive boat that I ended up with stripes as the sun caught me whilst I couldn't move..no fair. Did a bit of shopping, haggling ...

... Calamari, Octopus, grilled fish, fat shrimps and a first for myself lobster....it was so good! We had a last day around stone town after emotionally saying our farewells to our gorgeous house, to stroll the streets again and get a whisp of the historic place. Then it was bye bye Zanzibar and back to Iringa we cruised. The whole trip seems like a dream right now, it was so special and I couldnt of wished for a more exciting and spectacular trip. The Final Week - Pongwe Beach

Here we stayed at Pongwe Beach Hotel a little further down the East Coast. We try to end all our holidays on a high note, aiming to stay at the best hotel for our final days. We were not disappointed! Although all the hotels were superb - clean, welcoming, excellent food served by friendly staff - Pongwe Beach was probably the highlight, both for location and standards. It was ...
