The smoke rolled in as we left the bison behind. Three thousand acres of Yellowstone burned about three miles from Lake Lodge, where we finally pulled in for a late, late dinner. The check in clerk said that we'd have to evacuate if it approached as close as two miles.

The firemen was staying at Lake Lodge and had ringed the place with engines, so it was more of an anecdote than a threat. ...

Made our own waffles for breakfast today at our motel for the first time - quite embarrassing trying to use the machine in front of all the American guests who obviously all know how to use it. Then drove the last 268 miles to Yellowstone National Park. We got to the park too early to check into our cabin and therefore decided to start seeing some of the sights - and we are really glad we did.
